Secure Socket Layer (SSL) is a protocol developed by Netscape that provides secure communications on the Internet for such things as web browsing, e-mail, Internet faxing, and other data transfers. It ensures the security and privacy of the data being transmitted by encrypting it.. The server authenticates itself to the user using SSL to securely transmit credit card transactions, data transfers, and logins.
Secure confidential information from interception by using SSL on a website. It is important to ensure that the SSL certificate used is valid and that it has been issued by a trusted Certificate Authority. SSL is also used to verify the identity of the server and ensure that it is not an imposter.
How does It Works?
- To start a connection, the client and server must first agree on the protocol version and cipher suite they will use.
- The client then sends a “Client Hello” packet which contains its supported protocol versions, cipher suites, and compression methods.
- The server then sends a “Server Hello” packet with the chosen protocol version, cipher suite, and compression method.
- The server will then send its SSL certificate, which contains its public key.
- The client generates a symmetric key using the server‘s public key to encrypt the data that is sent.
- The server sends back an acknowledgement of the encryption and the client sends the data encrypted with the symmetric key.
- The server receives the data, decrypts it using its private key, and sends the response back to the client, which decrypts it
Advantages of SSL:
- Improved Security:
It helps protect data in transit between the client and the server with encryption. This provides an extra layer of security for sensitive information such as credit card numbers, usernames, and passwords.
- Improved Trust:
It helps to build trust with customers, as the presence of an SSL certificate indicates that the website is secure and verified by a trusted authority such as VeriSign.
- Increased Conversions:
Customers feel more secure when they see your website is secure, and this increases the likelihood of conversions and sales.
- Improved SEO Rankings: Since 2014, Google has been using SSL as a ranking factor when indexing and ranking websites in search engine results pages. This means that having an SSL certificate can help boost your SEO rankings.
What is SSL Certificate?
SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) certificates are small data files that digitally bind a cryptographic key to an organization’s details. When installed on a web server, it activates the padlock and the https protocol and allows secure connections from a web server to a browser. Typically, Secure credit card transactions, data transfer and logins, and more recently browsing of social media sites, with SSL.
