“They’ve already stopped showing the Main Spillway feed from the rotating CAM. It appears they’re adjusting the true Oroville lake levels after their “network” upgrade. Is the feed of the dam recycled from the last time the dam got this high? They don’t have my trust.”

This video shows the upper Main Spillway, which has been skipped for a couple weeks. I just checked the rotating CAM and the CAM is constantly buffering. Might be because people are excited–causing traffic problems–that’s the upper Main Spillway is shown. Maybe it’s been taken offline again.

Lake Oroville seems to be averaging a 0.03 foot per hour rise. Sometimes a little more and sometimes a little less. At 0.03 foot/hour the Oroville dam will overtop in 7 days. Maybe the leaking Emergency Spillway will kick in earlier.

I wonder how much evaporation there is. I know CA wastes 1/3 of their water on open air canals instead of pipes to import water due to evaporation alone.

Millie Kay told me that the 900 foot elevation point is to the top of the untested Emergency Spillway. Of course DWR doesn’t have a public Emergency Spillway CAM. They used to have a nice CAM on the other side of the diversion canal, which showed the Main Spillway and the Emergency Spillway. I also thought the 900 foot elevation point was to the top of the dam. I noticed that there is approximately 4-5 car heights to the top of the dam from the water’s surface judging by cars driving over the dam. You can barely see that the water’s surface appears to be at the top of the Emergency Spillway in the “Home” CAM.

Lake Oroville approaches the top
“OROVILLE — The water level at Lake Oroville has approached “the top” at 899 feet elevation for the second day in a row on Wednesday.
The last time the lake approached full capacity in the spring was in 2012, according to an email from DWR information officer Jason Ince.
Ince said there are no plans to test the emergency spillway, but there will be potential for waves to splash over the crest if the weather is particularly windy. He said wave splash will not affect the integrity of the spillway structure or dam…..” (more)

Can you please add the CAM on the other side of the Diversion Pool, overlooking the Main Spillway and Emergency Spillway to your CAM choices?…I’d like to see the Emergency Spillway when the lake water begins to overtop. A lot of tax payer money went into rebuilding the dam after the 2017 catastrophe.

Your emails were received by the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR). Department of Water Resources maintains and operates the Oroville Dam, including both spillways. The lower camera you were asking about was removed after the repair of the spillway was completed.
DPR staff was able to adjust our Lake Oroville SRA Visitor Center Camera and Lake Oroville SRA Camera to focus on the emergency spillway with the high lake level. These cameras can be found on our http://www.parks.ca.gov webpage, under “Live Video Gallery” under the heading “Visit a Park”.
Please let me know if you have any additional questions,

DWR no longer has a camera located at the Diversion Pool. The cameras were installed for the reconstruction of the spillway, which was completed several years ago. State Parks does have a camera that provides a view of the emergency spillway. The camera rotates views and provides various location shots.
Please note that Lake Oroville will not be overtopping with water flowing down the emergency spillway. DWR will continue to release water via the Hyatt Powerplant and main spillway to manage water levels at Lake Oroville.
Best,
Raquel

More PR spin? Interesting how the PR spin is ramping up at same time Lake Oroville looks to be going past full-pool. If you’ve noticed, the Main Spillway is releasing paltry amounts of water during the day. The outflow is mysteriously high during the overnight hours but the water flowing down the Main Spillway is still low–hmmmmm.

Pushed up by the waves. A sign the water level is too high. Also notice larger amounts of water pushed out of the ports on the Emergency Spillway used to release trapped water beneath the Emergency Spillway. The pressure pushing the water into the soil is enormous.

You can see the water leaking from the areas of the Emergency Spillway have increased. This could mean that the porting problem may not have been solved from 2017 or has been reestablished due to the high water pressure caused by full-pool. The porting problem was discussed by Scott Cahill, dam expert, in this 2019 Flyingcuttlefish post. The OG Wier is the Emergency Spillway edge. The rainy season usually begins in November. They must be concerned about the reservoir level increasing and putting additional pressure on the ground surrounding the Oroville Dam. As low as the reservoir currently is and they’re having water pushed up from below the Main Spillway shows you how unstable the surroundings really are. The problem areas are likely many. I think it’s difficult to pinpoint the exact tipping point until it’s too late.
