co-14: brain says no

a crude pixel drawing of a fat bumblebee laying infront of a laptop with a bored expression

i’ve hit another one of these terrible lulls between projects where my last project “went cold” because i didn’t touch it for two weeks so i no longer have the motivation to pick it up again, but i can’t start any new projects because the nasty little decision goblin in my head complains that everything i’m coming up with “will take too much boring boilerplate before its fun to work on”, so neither my last project nor any new projects are appealing to me

Original tags were: texttovideo, AI is Theft

i know “ai training data being just scraped from places” isn’t news in any regard but i do find it kind of revealing in a funny way that that text to video thing going around seems to watermark every single thing i’ve seen anyone generate with it with “shutterstock”

gee guys i wonder where you got all that training data, i wonder if you used it with permission, hmmmmm

a screenshot of the godot editor's "Asset Lib", showing one of the sort options is "Least Recently Updated"

i love that godot’s asset lib doesn’t have any kind of sort for “most downloaded” or “highest rated” or anything useful like that, but it DOES have “Least Recently Updated”, just in case I want the most abandoned plugin

co-10: tinypic linkrot strikes again

Original tags were: linkrot, frustration, The Cohost Global Feed, rain world, TIGSource

So I’ve been enjoying replaying Rain World to get access to the new DLC content that just came out, and it brought to mind how much I enjoyed following the TIGsource devlog that it had for several years (the thread is a good 300+ pages long!), so I decided I’d go back and skim it again, as the thread has a lot of nice debug visualisations and write-ups and whatnot.

co-09: gamemaker inertia

Original tags were: gamedev, gamemaker, godot, rant

So I’ve been tinkering away at my 3d framework for Gamemaker on and off for like, 4 years or so, slowly adding new features to it over time as I needed them as I used it for different projects. I initially started writing it for two reasons:

  • GM’s support for 3D is very basic so for anything more complicated than throwing vertex buffers at the GPU I’d need to roll it myself, which is a great learning opportunity!
  • I really disliked unity. I’ve been using GM for many years and I’m quite fast with it compared to how tedious I find unity.

Go harvest some cavern fungus for science!

Its a simple little game, both this and my last ldjam game ended up being more an experiment in execution than they were finished games, although I do feel I got more done here than Final Slumber. I wouldve liked to have polished it more but I have a nasty habit of spending too much time on under-the-hood stuff and then running out of time for everything else, oops :D

co-07: end of day 2!

Original tags were: ludum dare 52, ldjam, ludum dare, gamedev, gamemaker

game mechanics are starting to take shape! the core loop at this point is basically done which is nice!

still a lot i’d like to do tomorrow, but thankfully i’m like RIGHT at the threshold of MVP, i’ve got one or two “important” things left to do and then everything after that is just a bonus, i’m not really worried i’ll be racing against the clock as much as i usually am

co-06: i need to actually spend some…

Original tags were: threebee

i need to actually spend some time using threebee’s animation system for a project that isn’t a gamejam. every time i use it under pressure i discover 1-2 critical bugs that makes it impossible to use, that i would’ve IMMEDIATELY found had i actually used it before the jam.

perhaps i’ll finally be able to use it in a real project in 2025

co-05: LDJAM progress!

Original tags were: ludum dare 52, ludum dare, ldjam, gamedev, gamemaker

progress at the end of day one! I’m actually kinda happy with the speed i’m getting things done, the first 12 hours were very slow and i ended up wasting some time on something I couldn’t use but by the end of the day I’d picked up speed again.

the spit-n-polish goblin inside me desperately wants to waste more time on improving the movement tweens but i’m forcing myself to leave them for now as they’re “better than nothing”, tomorrow i need to focus on MECHANICS, not PRETTY ANIMATIONS, the pretty animations can come at the end if i have time
