Problems With Buttons

Hi, everybody!

I'm pretty new to Flash, so please excuse my idiocy. ( :
Here's my problem; I have a MC named "orange" (that is also his instance name) who I want to change color when a button is pressed. (I put the new color in frame 2 of the MC.) So I put this code in on the button:

on(release){
_root. orange. gotoAndStop (2);
}

There is no error message when I test the movie, but the button simply does nothing.
Any tutorials, advice, or help will really be appreciated. (Also, if this sort of question is not allowed or if it needs an LJ cut please tell me and I will fix it!)

Thanks in advance!

k, i suck at flash. i tried to make 4 different animations and then put them on one frame in the stage and use actionscript to control the movie and play those animations in sequence. that doesn't work though...

i could build the animations in the main timeline one after the other and then just put a play/pause button on it.

is there a way i can just import the little movie timelines in to the main stage timeline, rather than do all of this over again?

Forcing getUrl to open in new window/tab

G'day everyone,
I'm working on rebuilding my portfolio site, which is entirely flash (AS 2.0). Within my portfolio, I've used </b>'loadMovie'</b> to load a .SWF of a banner I did sometime ago. The .SWF of this banner contains getUrl links to the company's website - these links open in the same window.

However- I'd like to be able to somehow force these links to open in a new window / tab. The issue is I don't have the source (.FLA) file for this banner anymore, so I can't simply change the target of these links.

I've managed to trick it into working by placing another button over the loader that loads the banner .SWF, however this then prevents some nice animation in the banner that functions on button rollOver.

Anyone got any suggestion on how I can force the links within this .SWF to open in a new window / tab? Keep in mind I don't have the source file any longer.
Thanks in advance everyone.

Moock's MVC Clock - Calling Controller From A Movie Clip

Hi, all... I'm trying to implement a version of Colin Moock's MVC Clock from his Essential Actionscript 2.0 book, and I'm running into a problem.

Here's Moock's source code. (yeah... I'm still using AS2!)

I'm trying to substitute his buttons with Movie Clips, but I'm not sure how to add the Listener "click" event to the Movie Clip (he currently does it with default button controls).

His code does this to create the button and add the listener:
stopBtn = tools_mc.createClassObject(Button, "stop", 1);
stopBtn.label = "Stop";
stopBtn.enabled = false;
stopBtn.move(startBtn.width + 5, startBtn.y);
stopBtn.addEventListener("click", getController());

I'm trying to attach a movie from the library and have it achieve the same effect:
swatch_mc = target.attachMovie("mySwatch", "swatch_mc", depth);
swatch_mc.id = id;
swatch_mc._x = x;
swatch_mc._y = y;
swatch_mc.onRollOver = function() {
getController();
}

But nothing happens when I roll over it.

Any help?!?

Inventory?

Hello ^^

I'm new to this community as I'm new to Flash.
I'm using Macromedia Flash Pro 8 and chose to make a game for my first project (<< ambitious).
It's a kind of "make your own adventure game" (or what people call it), so people will face a different fate for a character based on the choices they make (it's no rpg where you can walk around, though).

Now, everything went fine up to the point where I wanted to do a shop/inventory for the character.
When clicked on an item it shall show it in a box at the top while at the same time the player buys this item. The buying progress works fine, but the items won't show up in the inventory.

>> This is what it looks like now <<

The items bought shall be placed in the boxes at the top.

I tried several tutorials but they were all focused on a RPG in which your character actually walks over the items. T_T

I hope someone is able to help me or can at least provide a tutorial that may help.

Pretty please?

removeChild is not killing audio

OK, this should be an easy one. I have a video inside a container movie clip. Said movie clip is called with "addChild". There is a button that closes the video/mc via "removeChild". However, the audio from the video can still be heard. How does one kill audio along with removing of a child?

Thanks!

EDIT - I have added "SoundMixer.stopAll();" to the removeChild function. While this works, I have a feeling there is a more proper way to do this?

Level Above

I'm looking to arrange a symbol to the front using AS2. I've read this can be done with this.arrange("front"). My problem is my AS2 is in symbol in the symbol so I need to call it similar to levelbefore.arrange("front").

Can any one tell me the right code for referring to the level above?

button within nested movie clip not functioning

Hi everyone,

Really need some help. I love Flash, but this is just killing me!

I'm putting together a website using an external AS3 file document class called "Master". The site is laid out inside a main movie clip container called "mainContainer". Inside, a "mainNav" movie clip contains 3 buttons that point the time line to frame labels. These frames contain additional movie clips for each page of the site. I have the 3 buttons in mainNav working fine. The issue I'm running into is getting an additional button called "testBTN" nested within one of the page MCs called "methods" to work. I'm getting the "TypeError: Error #1009..." output (yes, I've double checked that my instances are named). Perhaps there is something about scope I'm not understanding? A strange and possibly related issue I had earlier was with the three main buttons. They fade in half way through the mainNav clip, but I couldn't get them to function until I placed an invisible (alpha 0) copy of each at frame 1 of that clip. mainNav also exists on frame 1 of the mainContainer, whereas methods/testBTN is down the line. I have a feeling this has something to do with it, but I'm hoping there is a way to address it...

Anyway, my code is after the jump. The suspect lines are bold.

package {
import flash.display.MovieClip;
import flash.display.SimpleButton;
import flash.events.MouseEvent;

public class Master extends MovieClip {
public function Master() {

//button event listeners
mainContainer.mainNav.BTNmain.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, onMainClick, false, 0, true);
mainContainer.mainNav.BTNmethods.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, onMethodsClick, false, 0, true);
mainContainer.mainNav.BTNservices.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, onServicesClick, false, 0, true);

mainContainer.methods.testBTN.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, onTestClick, false, 0, true);

}

//navigate by frame label rather than frame number
private function onMainClick(evt:MouseEvent):void {
mainContainer.gotoAndStop("main");
}
private function onMethodsClick(evt:MouseEvent):void {
mainContainer.gotoAndStop("methods");
}
private function onServicesClick(evt:MouseEvent):void {
mainContainer.gotoAndStop("services");
}

public function onTestClick(evt:MouseEvent):void {
mainContainer.gotoAndStop("main");
}

}
}

AS3 main timeline control from external swf

Can anyone kindly explain to me how I control the main time line from a button inside an externally loaded swf? It's driving me a bit crazy...

I have a container movie clip within the main swf that loads an external "menu1.swf" via:

var ld:Loader = new Loader()
ld.load(new URLRequest("menu1.swf"))
addChild(ld)

Everything looks good, but I need the buttons in menu1.swf to control the main time line back in the master swf. This is AS3. Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

mouse y-position scrolling?

Hi everyone. I'm new here and hoping to get some help. I'd like to create a simple, vertical scrolling list of links that is only has about 6-8 lines visible at one time. I've been searching for tutorials, but all I find are scrollbar links. I'd like my list to scroll up and down based on the mouse y position in the list region. The best working example I can find is how they do their secondary navigation here:
http://www.radarstudios.com

I need to do this in AS3 and I'm assuming it has something to do with creating the list in a fully extended movie clip, mask the region I want visible, etc. Anyone ever see a tutorial on this kind of nav?

Thanks!

streaming sound

Hello!

I am new to this community and relatively new to Macromedia Flash. I have what I hope is a simple question. I am creating an instructional movie, and what I do was record a separate mp3 voice file, and then I put it on a layer in my flash movie. When I play my movie while in flash, everything syncs up according to where I put key frames to introduce things to fit with what my voice file says. However, when I do a test movie, or when I export the movie, everything drags a little behind where it should be in the soundtrack. The drag is consistent and does not get worse or better throughout the movie.

I tried changing my sound layer from event to streaming, and now it syncs just fine but it sounds crappy (all echo-y and low quality). Is there a better way to do this?

Thank you so much!!
