Need help with classes ...

I am supposed to write a custom class (for a project for school). It can be anything. Problem is, I really don't get classes. I don't understand the point, or what they do, or why they are good, or how to make them, or anything. Any insight, or examples (no I won't just grab it, I really want to learn this stuff) would be much appreciated.
