🏔️ Misty Morning
A latte in one hand and a leash in the other
Welcome to the one hundred and seventeenth issue of Monday Morning Data Science from the Fred Hutch Data Science Laboratory. We are excited to show you what we have been working on (Fresh from the Lab), plus links that we think you would be interested in (Our Weekly Bookmarks Bar). Part of the purpose of this newsletter is to start conversations, so if you have a question or there is something you would like to share with us please let us know by responding directly to this email.
Our Weekly Bookmarks Bar
[Job Opportunity: Clinical Analyst] Fred Hutch is hiring an entry-level clinical analyst to support clinical analytics, reporting, and data-driven decision-making in collaboration with care teams and partners like UW Medicine. The role involves working with data (e.g., SQL, dashboards, EMR data) and requires strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
[Request for Alpha Testers: cBioPortal] cBioPortal is inviting you to test two in-development AI assistants: a DB agent for querying genomics data conversationally and a NAV agent for navigating the platform more easily. Your feedback will help refine these tools and shape their future for the cancer research community.
[Blog Post & NASA Report: Elements of Engineering Excellence] Vicki Boykis offers commentary on a NASA report which argues that engineering failures often stem from cultural and organizational issues, including reduced hands-on involvement, over-reliance on procedures, decentralized authority, and growing complexity. It shows that moving away from hands-on engineering toward oversight weakens technical understanding and ownership, making it harder to detect and prevent problems.
As always you can contact us by replying directly to this email, or if you work within the Fred Hutch/University of Washington/Seattle Children’s Cancer Consortium you are welcome to join us on the Fred Hutch Data Slack Workspace.
