I'm finding it increasingly difficult to use Livejournal and can't get cross-posting from Dreamwidth to work any more. I don't want to delete my account because I still have a lot of photos posted here that aren't easy to find elsewhere, and because I still like to check up on what friends who didn't cross to Dreamwidth are up to occasionally.

Since I'm seeing spam on comments occasionally and probably won't post very often I've decided to disable comments on all posts. I'm continuing to post regularly on Dreamwidth, if you want to follow me there it's the same user name.

Forgotten Futures 4 Updates

As some of you will know I've been revising my RPG setting based on Carnacki the Ghost Finder and converting it to PDFs. I've reached a point with this now where I've either fixed everything or am blind to my own errors (probably the latter), so I'm going to go public with links to everything, if you spot any problems PLEASE let me know about them. I'll be putting links to this on my site and uploading the files to other sites in a week or so once I'm sure there are no huge problems.

One thing I'm aware of is that a few illustrations that have some white space may look slightly yellow. This is actually something that's gone wrong with the current releases of Adobe Acrobat, hopefully other PDF viewers won't have a problem. You may be able to fix it by messing around with Acrobat's accessibility settings. These are free downloads as usual, but there's a Paypal tip link on my site if anyone wants to use it - please include a message saying what the money is for! This has ended up as SIX files:

There's also a little chapbook I found in the British Library that is a mashup of the first four stories, plus a poem which has nothing to do with Carnacki, which Hodgson's American publishers printed in 1910 to register the copyright. It's basically a clip show of exciting bits and not incredibly coherent, but interesting if you like REALLY obscure literary curiosities. Yesterday turned out to be a short outage. The transfer is now supposed to be happening on 5th-6th December and will hopefully be seamless as regards the forgottenfutures.org and forgottenfutures.co.uk names. forgottenfutures.com is with Nominet and hopefully it won't take too long to move it...

The Struggle For Empire - A Story of the Year 2236

Forgotten Futures 12 was to have been based on The Struggle For Empire - A Story of the Year 2236 (1900), a short novel by Robert William Cole that appears to be the first example of military SF actually set in space. For a lot of reasons that never happened. I originally intended to put the book and some of the other material I'd prepared for this setting on line, but somehow never got round to it.

Recently I was reminded of this, and after 12+ years I've finally got round to finishing the PDF version of the book. I should eventually add HTML and ePub versions, and set up a page for this and some of the other material I intended to use in the RPG - but for now here's a link to the novel. If you read this and spot anything that looks like a typo please let me know!

I now appear to be unable to post to Livejournal from my main PC - no idea why, given how many trackers etc. I was detecting the last time I was successful I now doubt that it's worth the effort. I can make it work from my laptop but I really don't want to go there if I can avoid it, endless copy and paste is a pain with a trackpad. If anything world-shatteringly important happens I shall try again, but it's already nearly three weeks since I last updated here and to be honest it's too much like hard work.
