M.Phil.
It's been confirmed that I'll be doing the M.Phil. next year. Or, rather, it's been confirmed that the work I've been doing to this point has been part of an M.Phil. degree, the next year of which will be spent writing a 40,000-word thesis. Were I not doing an M.Phil., I would've been doing an M.Litt., which is a one-year degree in which I'd've been writing a 15,000-word thesis over the summer.
This is not unexpected; but it's still a big relief, because I don't know what the mechanics of the selection process are, and so I couldn't be sure. It's a relief also because I've been doing very little work since I finished term - reading literature, mainly - and if I'd not gotten the M.Phil., I wouldn't've been able to afford to take this much time off work, as I'd've had the M.Litt. thesis to do.
I'll be doing the thesis on aesthetic value. I don't know what direction I'll take more specifically than this, but I'm really looking forward to finding out. I was in Hodges Figgis in Dublin yesterday, and picked up a dirty great anthology of continental aesthetics. It looks so fascinating.
