read the entry below too, they go together...
The theory was not a new one by any means, just wrapped up in packaging that was a bit different. It had been proposed--by who, it was not important--that the function of the universe was to write down the nine billion names of god. For centuries, the religions of the world had labored at this task, and the list became longer and longer as the years went by, but now was the information age. Two computer programmers realized that, given the proper program and a good enough computer, they could finish this monumental task within 3 or 4 months, instead of taking thousands of years. So they set themselves at it and soon enough the computer was churning out thousands of names every minute. A good three and a half months had passes, with only a few weeks remaining before the program would complete its operations, and the two young men began to wonder exactly what would happen once it came to an end. So they arranged to be out in the wilderness, enjoying the country of their youth when the program finally completed its appointed task.
The evening finally came, finding the two men riding mules down into a canyon as the stars lit up the night sky. The first man muses that the program would be finishing right around now, and wonders what this night will bring. Hearing no response from his partner, he glances over. His friend is staring straight up at the night sky. The first man follows his glance and looks up as well.
Overhead, without any fuss, the stars were going out.
