English 576.03 Issues and Movements in Critical Theory 5 Credits

Special Topic: Queer Theory. In this class we will explore how the recent political and theoretical appropriation of the term "queer" has influenced how we theorize about notions of gender and sexuality. As Annamarie Jagose argues, “queer effects a rupture, which, far from being absolute, is meaningful only in the context of its historical development.” Therefore, we will trace the history of ideas about gender and sexuality from the homophile movement to gay liberation, the women’s movement and lesbian feminism, to queer theory. More specifically, we will address the question of whether the rubric of "queer theory" represents a point of departure, leaving behind supposedly fixed sexual identities such as “homosexual” and “heterosexual” as well as supposedly essential categories—“sexuality", "gender", "man", "woman"—for a broad critique that seeks to address questions of nationality, race, gender, and class, as well as sexuality. Interrogating the arguments of supporters and opponents of queer, we will examine the influence of queer theory on progressive politics, social theory, and cultural studies. Required texts will most likely include Jagose, Queer Theory: An Introduction; Foucault, The History of Sexuality. Volume I: An Introduction; Course packet containing additional required readings. Students will be graded on class participation, weekly quizzes, mid-term and final exam, final paper.

Questions to be pursued include: What makes a film queer—the author, the spectator, a "queer aesthetic"? What distinguishes queer film and video from gay and lesbian representations—and queer theory from gay and lesbian theory? COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Active class participation, weekly quizzes, annotated bibliography (case study), final paper, final exam.
