Yeah, you. I'm talkin' to you. Maybe sometimes you scroll through this livejournal, and hell, maybe you don't read it at all, but I want your attention this time.
I know you're probably sick of all the politics that's plastered all over the media left, right, and center. God knows I am. Maybe you already know who you're gonna vote for in November. Maybe you still haven't decided. But I just wanna ask one thing of you. It's not exactly small, and it's probably not always that easy, but it IS important, and it'll do you good.
GET UP OFF OF YOUR ASS, ALREADY.
Honestly? I don't care who you vote for in November. I really don't. I just care that you VOTE. I want you to GIVE A SHIT. I would much rather you be an avid Bush supporter who gets up in my face and tells me why a vote for Kerry is a vote for Satan, or some other such nonsense, than look at both candidates, say, "Eh, I don't really like either of them" and ignore the whole thing. And I wanna say, for the love of GOD don't vote for Nader, but even that is better than not voting at all. I want you to CARE.
Get up. Get interested. Read the paper. Turn on the TV. Talk to someone you don't usually talk to. Vote. VOOOOOOTE!!! It won't hurt, I PROMISE. PAY ATTENTION. Put the fucking beer down and do something intelligent for once. This country has a lot of problems, and it always will, but it would have a lot LESS if you would just TRY, just a little bit.
I'm not asking you to become Mr. or Ms. Front-running Activist, because not everyone can, but as far as I am concerned, your right to bitch goes down the shitter the instant you stop participating in this country. Do you vote? Do you know what's happening in your county right now? In your city? In your state? Okay, well, good. That's a start.
And don't even get me started on the people who abandon ship. I understand that you think this country sucks a lot of the time, and if you really can't stand to live here, then do go ahead and move, but don't be offended if I say we're better off without you. Coz we are. We need people who care. People who will try to educate themselves, and ask a few questions to find out more, and make their voice heard.
Don't think gay people should have the right to marry? Really? Okay, tell me why. Do you have a good reason? Or is it just because your mom and dad think so? Maybe all your friends do? That's a pretty damn dumb reason, man.
What about guns? Do you have an opinion? Have you been paying attention at all? Do you know that the ban on assault rifles has recently been lifted? How do you feel about that?
Even if you disagree with me on every single value that I hold, I want to hear why. I want to hear that you care about what happens in this country, and to the people who live in it. YOUR family, YOUR friends, YOUR coworkers, YOUR countrymen. And maybe someday YOUR kids. Maybe we don't agree, but if I can believe that you are concerned about what is going to happen in this country, and are trying to do even a bit of difference, then I will sleep better at night.
