My hands are cold...
So, I was testing a scientific theory tonight, that the Puget Sound isn't as cold as the Pacific. HOW WRONG I WAS. The Puget Sound is EVERY BIT As cold and salty as the Pacific. Not a surprise....considering it's basically just an inlet of the Pacific. Hee.
Yeah, so tonight was our last sailing lesson. It was supposed to be on Tuesday, but tuesday was wet and miserable and rainy. We would still have had lessons regardless, but there was NO WIND. SO. We attempted to give ourselves one more chance by moving it to tonight, but there was still, like, no wind. SO. We went out and Rob and Bryce (*drool*) showed us how to put a reef in the sails, which you do if you have a very heavy wind but you still need to do some sailing.
And then Bryce started talking about skurfing and how much fun it is, and he mentioned he had his surfboard around, aaaaaand I ended up volunteering to give it a try. (For all y'all who don't know what skurfing is, it's a cross between surfing and water skiing. You get pulled behind a motorboat, but on a surfboard, not skis. And, usually said skurfboard has a place for your feet and your knees, should you want to kneel, but Bryce's was a regular ole surfboard. SO THERE WAS A DEFINITE LACK OF FOOTHOLDS.) Mind you, I have precisely zip experience in anything of this sort. I have never surfed, skied, skateboarded, or jet skied IN MY LIFE.
So. We watch Bryce demonstrate, skurfing gracefully and skillfully around the bay behind the boat Rob was pulling him with (and this was terribly ghetto, too, just a rope with a knot and a loop at one end, no proper handholds---OW ropeburn) and then...my turn. Because of course no one ELSE was stupid enough to want to do this! XD Mind you, I had brought neither an extra change of clothes or even a towel with me, because this was a spur of the moment thing, so it was just pure LUCK that one of my classmates had a wetsuit with her, because she's a kayaker and she just keeps it in her truck. I'm still flabbergasted it fit---Jude (that's the woman with the wet suit) is 5'1" and I am 6'1". *eyes the wetsuit* Whatever, it fit, and she even had a towel. I AM NOT HYPOTHERMICYAY.
So....yeah. NEEDLESS TO SAY, I had a close encounter of the watery kind, three times. First try, SPLOOSH! Me: *SHRIIIIIIIIEK* HOLY FUCK THAT'S CO-- *disappears beneath the water*
Second try was a bit better, I got about fifteen feet away on the surfboard before SPLASH!!! Into the water again. And, yeah, the water was about 50-ish degrees. *dies*
Third try....yeah, about TWO FEET. Hee. SPLASH! Then I called it a night. I was like, okay, obviously I am not meant to do this. *giggleS*
So, the end result was a very wet, very cold Kat, who successfully gave herself rope burn and scraped her legs all to hell scrambling back up on the floating dock. And....holy fuck, guys, that water is COLD. And kinda scary. I have no fear of water whatsoever, but for one second when I went under, I had this horrible fear I was going to be dragged down and drown. It's just very deep and very cold and very...yeah. Anyway.
in other news, I have apparently lost 10 pounds this summer. But then, not eating as much cuz there's not much food you care for in the house combined with walking around 5 miles a day at work will do that for you. :D
