So, I'm re-reading Master and Commander, the first book in Patrick O'Brien's series. I thought it would make more sense now that, you know, I actually know wtf he's TALKING About when he goes on about the yardarms and the foretopsail and the main jib and blah blah blah sailorcakes. And it does! And the fact that the Sophie is a SLOOP is confusing me. O.o You'd think a big ship (even a luggish square-rigger like they all were on those days---the US didn't start having traingular sails until the 1920's Marconi rigs. Yes, Middle Easterners. We can hear you laughing at us for being so very far behind you.) anyway. You'd think a big ship would have more than one mast! But a sloop only has the one, unless he's using the word in a different way than sailors do now.
And I had apparently forgotten how HILARIOUS the books are. I mean, come on. He describes a goat as "defecating with intent."
And---
" 'It is a great while since I felt the grind of bone under my saw,' he added, smiling with anticipation."

In other news, work changed dress code on me. Starting next monday, we can only wear black pants, black shoes, and white shirts. SUCK! ON the other hand, it let me go shopping yesterday and spend money on new shirts, pants, and shoes. CHEE! I discovered a Forever 21 at the mall nearest Port Townsend (Read: 40 minutes away in Silverdale XD) and went to TOWN. Oh man, I bought some CUTE clothes. I'll wear them outside of work, which is one reason I didn't feel bad at all buying them. Whee!
Bonus question for the day: What is ambergris? Cookies and a 200 word drabble (yes, I'll do NC-17, fandom negotiable) to the first person who can find that out. (I'm not yet cool enough to do a drabble for everyone who posts. Or organized enough. Hee.)
