The former archbishop delves deep into a word that is easy to use on social media, but hard to follow through on You don’t need to scroll far down a social media feed to find someone expressing “solidarity” for the victims of cruelty or injustice. A show of solidarity feels more emphatic than expressing support or sympathy. As Rowan Williams argues, it can act as “a moral intensifier”, positioning us squarely alongside the victim. It can also be a declaration of innocence, a way of distancing ourselves definitively from the perpetrators and their guilt. Williams wants to move us beyond this idea of solidarity as unequivocal identification. He has some sharp things to say about “empathy” as a modern solve-all, when it too often serves the needs of “a clamorous self” that “cannot bear the idea of a real stranger”. True solidarity, he argues, isless a virtue to be cultivated than a human condition to be acknowledged. It requires us to accept two stubborn truths: first, that we can never identify completely with someone else, because we are inescapably separate from them in mind and body; and second, that we are innately social beings, linked to each other by invisible threads of obligation and reciprocity. He is not called Shark because he can smell blood, but because he can smell fear. He reveals this, then walks off, cackling. It’s that kind of film. Daggers Inn is muddled, but landmark cinema in certain respects. Finally, the UK has a film to rival the 2003 US indieThe Room, which still plays to packed houses, with audiences eternally thrilled by its hilarious creative choices and uneven performances. Daggers Inn is similarly ripe, not in the calculatedly trashy manner of a Sharknado film, but in the sense of amateurs’ original, sincere but almost entirely unsuccessful efforts. Walk around the tall white columns surrounding it and you’ll eventually find the entrance to its inner sanctum. It might not be quite as old as the nearby Parthenon but it does hold a unique kind of treasure: the personal photographs of director Yorgos Lanthimos. Taken over the last few years as he wandered his home country, they offer a glimpse of Greece through the auteur’s absurdist eye. We see a coffin resting against a wall next to a mop, and a couple of horses with their heads chopped off by foregrounded trees. A roadside memorial is shown underneath a sign warning of danger ahead –the wiggly road symbol points directly upwards, as if suggesting the route to the next life for the poor victim. This last image is poignant, strange and funny, eliciting the same awkward clash of emotions you get from watching Lanthimos’s films. Continue reading...

This weekend I started work on rewriting the static site generator that I use for this website, Aurora. I was looking over the codebase and wondered if I could make the code a bit more efficient and easier to understand. I had ideas for new abstractions –things I could do to reduce the amount of code needed. One of the areas I wanted to improve on was the logic for generating category and date pages. The existing version of Aurora had large functions that generated these pages. This weekend I realised I could create what I have been thinking of as a “virtual page”, which is basically adding the category name to the list of templates to be generated with an identifier that the page is a category page. While the rewrite doesn’t have several of the features in the current version –and for this reason, as well as incompatibilities with how templates are generated, I have not yet open sourced the code –the code works well for the use case I have in mind right now (this website!). Importantly, I had a lot of fun with the rewrite, challenging myself to figure out how to reduce the number of lines of code in the project while keeping the code clear. This is the third time I have written a static site generator. Every time I have rewritten the code, my code has been shorter. I think it is because I understand the problem better every time I do a rewrite, and every time I come with new knowledge about programming. Looking through the current Aurora codebase, I realised there were features I really like too: the hooks API that lets you “hook into” the generator and process templates with your own Python logic works well. In cases where I really liked how a feature was designed, I brought it into the new codebase. On the topic of rewriting, a few weeks ago I removed almost 1,000 lines of code from the Artemis codebase by creating a better abstraction for forms. The codebase had a lot of repetitive code that came from copy-pasting form boilerplate; one abstraction allowed me to reduce a significant amount of repetition. I don’t have a timeline for releasing an update to Aurora. This was more a project for me to practice my skills. I started with a few ideas that I wanted to explore and ended with implementations of those ideas. And: my new generator is now running this blog! If any pages don’t look right, please let me know.

After going platinum in the 90s and writing the South Park theme, bassist extraordinaire Claypool discusses the AI-themed concept album he’s made with Sean Ono Lennon When Les Claypool wrote his first song for Primus in 1984, he faced a crisis of self-confidence. “I was too embarrassed to sing in my apartment,” he says on a video call. “But my roommate at the time was dating the preacher’s daughter, and had keys to the church across the street.” In the dead of night, the madcap bassist and singer took his recording equipment to the empty church, set up on the podium, and first sang his anti-war song Too Many Puppies, which recast soldiers as little dogs: “Too many puppies are being shot in the dark!” It was the first oddball creation of many: Primus’s rubbery fusions of prog, metal and funk have made Claypool one of rock’s most unlikely success stories. Albums such as 1991’s Sailing the Seas of Cheese are cartoon lands filled with colourful misfits, largely drawn from Claypool’s upbringing in blue-collar California, and given voices inspired by Mel Blanc’s work for Looney Tunes. Today, Claypool has two platinum records, a legacy of influencing giants such as Deftones, and a global cult fanbase including Rush and Tom Waits. But his wackiness, along with his having written the South Park theme and popularised the fan catchphrase “Primus sucks”, has made it hard to peel off the label of class-clown. “There’s an iron hand in that velvet glove,” he promises. Scientists in the US have uploaded a fruit fly to a computer simulation, while an Australian lab has taught neurons on a glass chip to play a 90s video game. How long before we are all living in a sci-fi movie? It sounds like the opening of a sci-fi film, but US scientists recently uploaded a copy of the brain of a living fly into a simulation. In San Francisco, biotechnology company Eon Systems created avirtual insectthat knew how to walk, fly, groom and feed in its virtual environment. Researchers in Australia, meanwhile, have taught a petri dish containing 200,000 human brain cells to play the iconic 90s shooter Doom. One experiment has pushed a brain into a computer; the other has plugged a computer into brain cells. Both stories have been hailed as scientific breakthroughs, but have also sparked inevitable fears about the prospects of lab-grown humans and digital clones. Should we be concerned?
