HOMFG THE NEW RENT TRAILER WITH OUT TONIGHT PLAYING IN THE BACKGROUND AND THE ACTING AND THE CUTE TAYE LAUGHING AND THE ANTHONY AND THE JESSE. WTF.

i am so in love with this show. i am so, so pumped for this movie.

you know, it's sort of odd. i love RENT, but i could never even imagine approaching a RENT fandom. and it's true. i couldn't touch a RENT fandom ( as in fics, ships, etc. ) with a ten-foot pole. and i think i just realised that, too, after watching the newest trailer, but i also think that i know why.

in all of my other fandoms (because there are so many, of course; basically it's HP, QAF, house, and kitchen confidential), i've been left wanting more, and that feeling is especially prominent in the HP fandom. i think it's most likely because none of the romantic relationships have been developed, yet, save for the experimentation and mixed-up feelings that so many of the characters are having at the mo. but those feelings aren't set in stone, so we, the fandom writers, don't feel restricted by them. we can stray from the canon ships because none of them were permanent (for the kids, at least). harry, ron, hermione, ginny, draco, theo, etc. all have emotions that are out of control and don't allow them to settle on one single person, and so none of us fandomers feel the need to pair each kid with only one other. we like to experiment with ships much as they like to experiment with their attractions, and it all ends with mixed pairings that everyone just kind of takes in stride. one day, harry is paired with draco, while the next he is paired with ginny or blaise or cho or ron.

it's the same with kitchen confidential, and house though those are fandoms to which i'm much newer. there, we can play around with jack/stephen or chase/foreman or, dare i say it, something other than house/wilson, and that's because none of it is really set in stone. we see relationships that are much more developed, sure, but none that are really stated as fact. and so, again, we as writers feel no need to limit ourselves when it comes to pairings.

and the concept of time, too, can be altered in fics with these fandoms. we like to speculate about what might happen after the show ends, how the characters will finish out the rest of their lives (or, well, i do, at least).

but for RENT, that's never been my experience. in the (relatively, compared to shows that run for seasons upon seasons) short show and plotline of the story, i get everything that i've ever wanted out of the story. all of the romantic relationships in the show are so right because, sometimes, they're so wrong. it doesn't matter that mark's a little bit gay or that roger likes to get intimately close to his flatmate when they sing to each other, or that benny kind of flirts with the both of them to get what he wants. they're all set with who they have, and they're happy with it. because they've found who it is that they need and can be content (even when freezing and starving to death), so can i.

and i don't need to know what happens after the show. i know that there are a bunch of people out there who wonder about it, who speculate, but that's never been something that i, myself, wanted to know. we have enough closure, and we know what most likely happens, so why feel the need to change it at all?
