This leaves a lot of bloggers - especially new ones - unable to compete with sites who have spent the time to properly optimize their site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below is a list of changes we recommend making:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>For new blogs: <\/strong>Change date-based URLs to post-name in <strong>Admin &gt; Settings &gt; Permalinks<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Note<\/strong>: for existing blogs with a history, you'll want to do this carefully, and set up 301s - or not at all. We recommend hiring an SEO expert to manage this.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress-seo-url-permalink\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">See this overview from Yoast<\/a> <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If changing to non-date-based URLs, make sure to use <a aria-label=\"this service from iMark Interactive to fix your redirects (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imarkinteractive.com\/our-services\/permalink-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this service from iMark Interactive to fix your automatic redirects<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Note<\/strong>: You'll also need to update your manually-written internal links<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/feastdesignco.com\/food-blog-recipe-index-pages-need-content\/\">Add content to your category pages<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Set up Google Analytics<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Set up Google Search Console\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><del>Set your preferred domain to non-www <\/del><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As of July 2019, Google has merged these all together<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enable SSL (via your web hosting company) and enable forceful redirect to HTTPS<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Forcefully redirect all pages to non-www for shorter URLs, which help with click-through-rates in Google\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This is more important for new bloggers than established bloggers, but existing bloggers should be forcing people from one version or the other to avoid spreading links and content across two subdomains <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Disable pingbacks in <strong>Admin &gt; Settings &gt; Discussion &gt; Attempt to notify any blogs linked to from the article<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pingbacks are nofollow, which provide no value to you<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Disable pingbacks in <strong>Admin &gt; Settings &gt; Discussion &gt; Allow link notifications from other blogs (pingbacks and trackbacks) on new articles<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pingbacks are nofollow and provide no value to readers, and are mostly spam<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Disable avatars in <strong>Admin &gt; Settings &gt; Discussion &gt; Show Avatars<\/strong> (unchecked)\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Avatars provide no reader value, and slow down pagespeed by loading third-party images (gravatar)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><s>Note: this may break the user-profile widget in the sidebar, replace it with a <a href=\"https:\/\/feastdesignco.com\/how-to\/wordpress-themes\/genesis-user-profile-widget\/#custom-html\">custom html user profile widget<\/a><\/s><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make sure you're using the <a href=\"https:\/\/feastdesignco.com\/modern-sidebar\/\">Modern Sidebar<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Admin &gt; Settings &gt; Reading &gt; Blog pages show at most &gt; 20<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>despite this being called \"blog pages\", it actually sets the number of posts on archive pages (eg. categories)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"feast-plugin\"   class=\"wp-block-heading\" >Feast Plugin<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Set your \"<a href=\"https:\/\/feastdesignco.com\/edit-post-info\/\">Edit Post Info<\/a>\" using our default recommendation with published, modified and author link<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/feastdesignco.com\/edit-post-info\/#author-information\">Set your author link<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enable <a href=\"https:\/\/feastdesignco.com\/system-fonts\/\">system fonts<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Follow our <a href=\"https:\/\/feastdesignco.com\/recipe-update-checklist\/\">Recipe Update Checklist<\/a> when updating posts (print it off if necessary)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Set the \"Number of posts to display in categories\" to 20\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Make sure this matches the <strong>Settings &gt; Reading &gt; Blog pages show at most &gt; 20<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"mediavine-adthrive\"   class=\"wp-block-heading\" >Mediavine + AdThrive<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Go into Mediavine and AdThrive settings and enable their lazyloading <strong>and<\/strong> CLS optimization settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"yoast-seo-plugin\"   class=\"wp-block-heading\" >Yoast SEO Plugin<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We recommend using at minimum the free version of Yoast, which handles a lot of the configuration and automatically applies best practices to your site and posts.
