Writer's Block: If I had a hammer

As a child, did you feel like you were you expected to pursue a certain type of career? How did this make you feel? Did you wind up choosing a different profession or path?

I never felt that I was pushed toward a certain career, but I was very definitely aware of the fact that both of my parents worked in jobs that they did not enjoy. My mother was a real estate agent for more than fifteen years before moving onto the Child Support Agency (which she likes because she gets to tell people what to do) and my dad currently works at a place that sells advertising materials to companies (things like sale tags and signs) along with a plethora of Christmas decorations for both commercial and private retail. He's worked in other similar jobs previously and it all seems to suck ass.

I was - and continue to be - aware of my parents' experiences in the workforce and became determined to find my own place in the workforce, rather than being pushed into a place that initially seems convenient. It's not my idea of fun. So, while I don't know what I want to be when I grow up, I want to find something I like and I'm good at.

I'm also glad that my parents never tried to push me in a certain direction. I always felt really bad for kids in that situation.
