Writer's Block: King of Pop
Which Michael Jackson album, if any, has influenced you the most?
I remember being a small kid, maybe four, and flipping through my parents' record collection and seeing this one that I couldn't put down. There was this young guy reclining in a white suit and black shirt. I couldn't take my eyes off his animal print pocket square and the neat gold writing across the top of the record cover. I didn't know it then, of course, but that was Thriller, and it was my first exposure to Michael Jackson.
About two years later I remember sneaking out of my room when everyone else was asleep (see? I was a poor sleeper even then) and turning on the TV and putting the sound down real low. I saw that guy again but instead of reclining on a 2D album cover, there he was wearing this incredible red jacket that I would have died for right then and these white socks. He was dancing with zombies and I knew that this wasn't going to be the last time I saw MJ.
So, for my sixth birthday I wanted to get one of those red jackets, get a new pair of white socks and become a zombie. I didn't get any of those things for my birthday (apparently you can't just become a zombie), but I did have a jumping castle party, which was cool.
So, in short, Thriller was the first Michael Jackson experience and it switched me onto him completely, but since then I've found things to deeply love about each of his albums.
