Oi, vey.
So, I decided to suck it up and go see The Unborn. I didn't have the highest expectations after having read those reviews last night and, in fact, I was expecting to want to walk out part way through. That didn't happen.
The movie had enough folklore and religious mysticism to make it well and truly freaky. There was a lot of talk about mirrors being gateways and stuff like that (common knowledge and a staple of horror stories) and various other superstitions. There was talk of the Holocaust (or, as it's known in my family, "that thing that happened") and what that means for twins (Mengele). It helped that the lead was abnormally good looking and Gary Oldman had a part to play too (didn't recognise him without his moustache).
Look, it's not going to win an Oscar - or probably any other award, lol. Some of the scenes ran together oddly and it took a while for all of the detail to come together properly. It was a bit hard to follow in places and some of the symbolism could be done without.
But having said all of that, there were parts where I was genuinely scared. The fact that the movie involved the odd possessed child, Nazis and various superstitions helped a lot with the scariness, and also the weird bugs, dogs and gloves made the freak factor rise considerably. All in all, it made an alright horror movie.
Go see it if you have some time to spare and no other movies tickle your fancy - you might be pleasantly (or unpleasantly) surprised.
