Somebody please shut me up....Rambling.
I've just deleted an entire entry - twice - because I was rambling and can't get my thoughts out properly. I was sure I was going to say something untoward, so I decided to avoid offending anyone.
Long story short, I just went and saw Doubt with my mother and we had very different opinions of the story. I think everyone should go and see it and report back to tell me what you made of it. It really was a great movie.
I'm going to gather that you all know the basic gist of it - involves a priest, a nun and a young boy; enough said.
At the end of the movie nothing is proved (possibly a spoiler, I'm sorry) but we're left to examine why we think what we think.
There's that stereotype of pedophilic priests unable to keep their hands off young boys and we know that, as with all stereotypes, there's a modicum of truth to it. But in this movie, was that so?
I think we've been conditioned to be mistrustful of certain members of certain churches because of what is portrayed in the media. Yes, again, some truth to it all, but not in all cases. I know for a fact that there are priests out there who just do their job (a job about which I have my own opinions, but that's for another post, I think). So why is it that this "priests doing awful things to youths" thing is something that we can't come away from?
Perhaps it's because it's seen as the greatest crime (if not the greatest sin) - someone in one of the highest, most trusted positions in a community taking complete advantage of the people they are supposed to guide and look out for.
Anyway, this has all turned into a ramble again. And I'm thinking about deleting it again. But I was definitely more kind here than in the previous entries.
I don't know where to go from here on this topic - I fear it might turn out like my other entries; convoluted bullshit about why the merest thought of organised religion irks me so much...Which, I think is because I can't join in (and also because life just isn't that black and white). So I'm going to put a lid on it now.
Go see Doubt. It'll do you the world of good. Or maybe it won't, but go watch it anyway.
