I feel like I've had a lobotomy.
I just got bach from seeing Twilight. Frankly, I wish I hadn't.
There were a lot of hints of really great things that could have been more deeply explored and other angles, I think, that they could have come at this thing from...But I was disappointed. Having said that, however, I haven't read the book that everyone appears to be so fond of. The trouble there is that having just seen the movie, I'm not going to.
Robert Pattinson is definately attractive and carries off "Vampire" very well (something to do with his great hair...All vamps have really good hair), but the whole movie couldn't possibly be based on how beautiful he and his character are. Sadly, I think that's all that they were shooting for.
That Bella character (I don't remember the actress' real name...Very telling) was..."Vapid" might be a bit harsh, but "textbook" and "average" are terms that might be acceptable. She too was very attractive, though, so I have to give her that and I think that - tragically - her character will probably speak to girls of a certain age. And possibly some boys.
The movie didn't play by the rules that vamps live by; especially that "no sunlight" bit, because, to me, even if it's overcast, that counts as sunlight.
I'm not even going to knock the movie too much more - tempting though it is - because all of the actors have to work from a script. They're doing as they're told and, unfortunately, I don't think that they were directed all that well, which is a shame, because even without having read the book, I believe it really could have been a great movie.
I'm a little afraid of what 13 to 16 year old girls are going to get from this, though, you know? I mean, sure there are a good many with brains in their heads who can accept this (and the books, too) for what they are - a (semi)decent form of entertainment and two and a half hours of quickened heartbeats. But what about the others? Bella tells Edward later on in the movie (oh, spoiler alert) "you can't ever leave me"...Seriously...I was holding my breath to hear "or I'll kill myself" afterward. Girls don't need to see a female lead being that needy...Especially when that lead tells another female charater to invite the boy she liked to the prom because she was a "strong, independant woman". What sort of mixed message is that?
Anyway, I think that's about it. I love vampire movies, I always have and this dross won't change that, but they really shouldn't make another movie in this series...Although, I'm happy to see so many young people reading books again a la Harry Potter. Anything that makes kids want to read is fine by me.
I may not be able to watch another vampire movie, though, because I think I might have told my oldest younger sister that I'd go see Twilight with her and I might have to gouge out my own eyes.
