Ummm...first attempt at actual Matthew/Guy. But it didn't turn out so well. OS I'm asking for help on how to refine it.

Title: To Understand You
Pairing: Matthew x Guy
Rating: General

He didn’t know what to do. For him, despite the harshness of the Sacaen plains, death was foreign to him, a stranger that did not belong to the tribe. So when he had heard the news, he didn’t know what to make of it.

When he found Matthew lying beside the tree, clutching something tightly in his hand, Guy didn’t know how to approach him. Hector and Lyn had tried, using words as a balm for his pain. However, no amount of words could get him out of the state he was in. Even Serra tried sincerely, but failed.

What could you say to a man who lost the will to live?

Revenge was there and Guy was quite confident that Matthew would want revenge, but somewhere inside of him hoped it was not so. Revenge can do awful things to people who have no way of life, who drive to becoming monsters. In fact, there was an old Sacaen legend the fortune-teller would say.

‘Those who lost their way are like wolves without tails. They fall headlong into their misery until there is nothing but regret’

Was that what Matthew was feeling right now? Guy thought quietly, Regret?

He didn’t know. Despite his not so friendly feelings towards Matthew, Guy did not in the slightest bit hate him. Maybe get a little infuriated with him, but never hate. It was never something so...strong…

Guy suddenly wished he was someone like Lucius who had a way with words and knew exactly how to calm someone down and put them to rest. Lords above, he manages to keep Lord Raven in track which is a feat (Guy fervently swears) few can accomplish.

What should he do?

“Guy, if you think you’re being quiet, you’re wrong,” A steady voice called, startling Guy from his position behind the tree, “Come out.”

Guy hesitantly stepped into the clearing to see a pair of bright amber eyes looking at him solemnly. Matthew stared at him for a minute (making Guy feel highly uncomfortable) before his lips twitched into a smile.

“I don’t bite, you know,” Matthew said, stretching and gestured for Guy to sit beside him. Guy did so, his green eyes tentative with worry.

Matthew ran a hand through his dusty-yellow locks that resembled the sand on the plains, Guy thought, and looked upwards, his eyes suffixed with an odd light and sorrow.

“Why did you come here?” Matthew asked suddenly.

Guy mulled over his reasons and realized it was a simple one, “I was worried, that’s all.” He muttered, folding his hands on his lap, “I have a right to be, you know.”

Matthew blinked and smiled that oddly sorrowful smile. Guy hated that smile. He wanted the mischievous cat-like smile he always seemed to have when Guy was around. Though Guy would never admit it (out loud), but he liked that smile.

It made things seem so much more…enjoyable. You would think an army always worries about dying and living, but when Matthew was there, he was more worried about getting that Oath Paper. And that made things seem…less grim.

“That’s true,” Matthew said wistfully, “That’s what she would have said too.”

She. Leila.

Guy said nothing, choosing to stare at the ground.

“I wonder…..where do I go after this?” Matthew said quietly, “Leila…why did you slip up?”

Guy felt a sharp pain in his chest which he knew had nothing to do with his physical condition. Finally, he gathered up the courage to speak.

“Pathetic,” He nearly winced at the scorn in his voice, “Do you want to give up simply because she’s dead?” His voice rose to a screech almost, “Don’t you dare give up on something you still have!”

There was a silence that Guy couldn’t put into words. It wasn’t a companionable silence nor was it an uncomfortable one. It just seemed unreal. Matthew’s eyes had glazed over, but now the hints of the old Matthew was starting to appear. Guy mentally cheered.

“And…what do I still have?” Matthew’s eyes met Guy’s. They were stony and yet, Guy could detect a hint of pleading in it, “What do I have?”

“A future,” Guy said solidly, “That’s more than enough.”

When he was a child, his dream had brought him many taunts from the children. But when he spent the nights with his mother, he remembered her voice telling him that he shouldn’t look at the past, but the future.

In the end, that’s what really matters.

Matthew looked away and smiled. Guy grinned as well. That smile belonged to the Matthew he knew, not the one moaning over a woman’s death.

This was the Matthew who made his life in the army living hell.

And it felt good to say that.

Matthew got onto his feet and brushed the dirt off his clothes. When he passed Guy, he slipped something in his hand. With that, he vanished, the shadow of the trees enveloping him.

Guy blinked and opened his fist. Inside was a small ring. Leila’s ring.

Guy slipped the ring on his finger and went back to camp.

Yes, it was lousy. And they were so out of character too...
