Our team

John Espinosa

Southwest Regional Director

[email protected]

My name is John Espinosa, and I am honored to serve as the Southwest Regional Director for FAAMA. I joined the FAA in 2010, bringing more than a decade of experience in training and development across academia and federal contract support. I currently serve as the Manager of the Training Delivery and Infrastructure Section within the Aircraft Certification Service (AIR). In this role, I lead a team responsible for overseeing AIR’s learning tools and delivering mission-critical technical training to both AIR employees and external partners. Ensuring our workforce is prepared and supported is a responsibility I take seriously, and it has shaped much of my career in public service.

Throughout my time in the agency, I’ve been actively involved in employee engagement, professional development, and community-building efforts. I joined the National Hispanic Coalition of Federal Aviation Employees (NHCFAE) shortly after arriving at the FAA and later served as the National Vice President, Director of Education, and Regional Chapter Director. My roles in the Coalition allowed me to gain insight and partnership with FAAMA through our conferences. I joined FAAMA shortly after becoming a manager in 2021, I have served as the FAAMA MMAC Chapter 382 President, where I had the privilege of supporting managers across MMAC and strengthening the chapter’s presence and impact.

My FAA leadership journey has centered on people—mentoring new leaders, helping teams navigate change, and creating environments where employees feel valued, empowered, and connected to their mission. These experiences are what drive me in my new role as Southwest Regional Director. My focus is to listen, build relationships, and advocate for the managers who keep our operations running safely and effectively. The Southwest Region is filled with exceptional leaders, and I look forward to expanding communication, collaboration, and support across all chapters.

I am a proud graduate of the University of Oklahoma, with a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Education. I’ve been married for 24 years, and my family—including my granddaughter—keeps me grounded and reminds me daily why strong leadership matters.

I’m excited to connect with members throughout the region, share experiences, and continue building the community that makes FAAMA such a valuable part of our careers.

Brian Patrick Salaway

Regional Director - Northeast

[email protected]

My name is Brian Salaway, and I am the Northeast Regional Director of FAAMA. I started my career with the FAA in 1990 as an air traffic assistant at NY Center, while commuting to Dowling College for my bachelor’s degree in Aeronautical Management. I became an air traffic controller at Republic Tower in 1993 and then returned to New York Center in June 1997 as a trainee. I was unsuccessful and returned to Republic in December 1998. At that time, I decided to pursue my MBA in Aviation Management and completed that degree in 2001. With that on my resume, I accepted an adjunct professor position at Vaughn College of Aeronautics, where I taught air traffic control, airline economics, and aviation weather. Through this position, I became active in AVSED (Aviation Space Education) in the NYC area. I still participate in the “Light My Way Career Day Inc.” annual event in NYC public schools located in the Bronx and Harlem.

In 2004, I moved on to LaGuardia Tower.  In 2008, I became a supervisor and joined FAAMA. I moved up from treasurer to president of Chapter 190 and then to Northeast Regional Director. In 2023, I accepted a position as Operations Manager at New York Center.

I’m happy to say that my career has brought me back to where I started 35 years ago. In that time, I have learned a lot about human behavior, management theories, and leadership. I enjoy having conversations with other members of FAAMA  to hear their points of view and to develop a common platform for the purpose of advocating on behalf of all FAA managers.

Jeff B Hubert

Regional Director - Pacific Northwest

[email protected]

I am honored to hold the position of Regional Director of the Pacific Northwest Region.  I joined FAAMA in 2012 when I became a Frontline manager at Oakland ARTCC.  I wanted to contribute to a greater independent voice for FAA managers.  In 2017 I assumed the role as the Chapter 281 President and endeavored to increase and improve communication to the Chapter’s membership. Over the next couple of years, I also held the collateral position of Western Pacific Associate Regional Director, then Pacific Northwest Associate Regional Director, before taking on the role of Pacific Northwest Regional Director in 2020.  I enjoy the challenge of new experiences, and I have learned a tremendous amount during my tenure on the Board of Directors.  Being a member of FAAMA has instilled the value of connecting with other FAA managers.  The connections that I have developed through FAAMA have enabled me to feel comfortable reaching out to other managers for a personal or professional perspective which allows me to make better decisions and ultimately be a better manager

I joined the FAA in 1986 as a developmental controller and was assigned to Oakland ARTCC. I was a CPC from 1989 to 2012 in the North Area and then a Frontline Manager from 2012 to 2014 in the East Area.  In 2014 I took over the Airspace & Procedures office as the Support Manager, and in 2017 I accepted the position of Staff Manager and continued in that capacity through March of 2018. In April 2018 I embarked on a 1-year detail to Headquarters in Air Traffic Services as a Team Manager (AJT-2210).  Then in April 2019 I returned to Oakland ARTCC as the Air Traffic Manager, a position I held through May of 2023. I then spent time at the Western Service Area on Oceanic Automation and airspace projects until I joined SFO ATCT as the Support Manager in October of 2024.

On the personal side, I have been married to my wonderful wife Denise for more than 30 years and we reside in Livermore, California where we raised our 3 children.  My family keeps me grounded and I thoroughly enjoy spending time with my grandchildren.  There is nothing better than seeing the world through the eyes of young children.  They do not yet have any preconceptions; all they see is a world full of possibilities rather than limitations.

Michael F Smith

President

[email protected]

My name is Michael F Smith and I was elected to the position of President of the Federal Aviation Administration Managers Association (FAAMA) at Convention of 2022. I am a member of good standing in Chapter 315 Wasatch Front. I was approached by a new supervisor in late 2011 who asked me about joining FAAMA. Although I had been a manager since 2004, I had never been approached nor told anything about FAAMA. He told me that FAAMA was there to advocate for me both to the FAA and to Congress. I was in and signed up that day. I was raised in SLC, Utah. I was fortunate to visit Salt Lake City ARTCC when I was a Junior in high school. That first visit listening to the controllers talking to these blips on the monitors hooked me. I studied and took the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) and took the test for military application. I received my ASVAB scores and was immediately contacted by all 4 services. The Army offered flying helicopters but the Air Force spoke to me about working fighters, bombers and tankers and I entered the Delayed Entry Program for the Air Force my Senior year to be a Weapons Controller. I graduated high school June 5, 1986 and reported to USAF Basic Training 5 days later on June 10. Upon graduation from basic and technical school, I went to Woomera Air Station, South Australia. I served there for a little over a year and earned an Air Force Commendation Medal. I then was very fortunate to go to McCord AFB in Tacoma, WA. I began working at Bigfoot Control which watched over the Northwest United States. I worked as a Weapons Director Technician and then as a Weapons Assignment Technician at Bigfoot. I worked military aircraft flying out of McCord, Portland, and 4 other bases. We would run intercepts on other fighters, refuel and control bombing raids. It was during a graveyard shift at Bigfoot when I was NOTAMing airspace with Seattle Center when he began speaking to me about taking the test to be a controller in the FAA. I took the test and was put on the fast track program. The fast track program wasn’t so fast and they froze hiring in the FAA as I was leaving active duty. I then joined the Utah Air National Guard and worked for Warlock Control again controlling military aircraft. I did that for 7 years where I traveled the world in some wonderful places and some not so wonderful places. I applied to go to MARC in Eden Prairie, MN and was accepted for January 1997. I completed MARC in June 1997 and was hired at Cleveland Center September 1997. I hardship transferred to SLC ARTCC October of 1999 due to some health issues in my family. I became a CPC at ZLC in January of 2001. I was approached by 2 supervisors in January of 2004 about applying to become a supervisor. I applied on the next bid and was a supervisor in October 2004. In 2007 I was asked to be an Operations Manager for a 1 year detail. After that 1st year, I became a facilitator for Ops Sup Workshop. I did that until 2014 when I did a 2 year detail as an Operations Manager at ZLC. I then applied to work as an Executive Technical Rep at Headquarters in July 2016 for 1 year. During the year I was asked to do another year detail at Employee Development teaching SYFY for new managers and developing OMLDP for Oms. I then returned to ZLC in 2018 as a Front Line Manager. I bid and was made a permanent OM at ZLC. In December of 2020 I was given my current job as an Acting Air Traffic Manager at SLC ATCT. I was made the permanent Air Traffic Manager at SLC ATCT in June of 2022. My FAAMA involvement began in 2011 when I was approached about FAAMA and joined up. I was immediately asked to be the VP for the chapter. I served as Vice President in Chapter 315 for a little over a year then I became the President of Chapter 315. My greatest memory of being the Chapter 315 President was that my chapter had 39 members and led the nation in PAC donations. In September of 2014 I became the Regional Director of Northwest Mountain in FAAMA. I served as RD until I was made the Director of Administration for FAAMA in January of 2017. I then served FAAMA as the DOA until November of 2021. The DOA serves the Executive Board of FAAMA by being on every committee established by the President. The DOA also signs every contract for the association. I had served in that role for 3 Presidents. I was elected to the office of Vice President in October of 2021 at the Convention. This past Convention in October of 2022, I was elected to the office of President of FAAMA. Shawnee and I have been married for 31 years and have 4 children and 5 grandchildren. Shawnee is known to all those that attend Convention because of her German Shepherd Service Animal, Coco. She fully supports and is involved in my 2 hobbies: family and FAAMA.

Sarina V Gumbert

Regional Director - Southern

[email protected]

I started my career in the US Air Force right after high school in 1998 and spent 7 years after boot camp and tech training working as an Air Traffic Controller for the USAF at Eglin AFB and Patrick AFB.  Upon leaving the Air Force, I went to work for RVA in a contract tower for almost 2 years before joining the FAA.

I started my FAA career in 2007 as an Air Traffic Controller at the Orlando International Tower and TRACON (MCO), at the time this was an up/down facility.  In 2009 MCO was split into two separate facilities, and I stayed at the now F11 TRACON as a radar controller for almost 10 years.  In 2017, I accepted my first management position as Operations Supervisor back at MCO ATCT.

During my 17 years in Central Florida, I served in numerous roles in the Orlando area facilities, such as a Support Specialist at F11, an Operations Manager at MCO and as an Air Traffic Manager at ORL.  I also worked for AJG in Headquarters as the ATLDP Ops Lead for over 18 months. Those roles helped me to prepare for where I am now.  In April of 2024, I made the move to the Enroute option and became an Operations Manager at Jacksonville ARTCC (ZJX), and this is where I now call home.

I joined FAAMA pretty much immediately after becoming a manager and have loved every minute of it, the networking this organization has is second to none!  I was first elected and served as the FAAMA Chapter 218 Vice President in 2018 and stayed in that role until June of 2023.  In 2019 and 2020, I was able to attend the FAAMA Training Summits for my chapter, it was these 2 events and the conventions that really showed me what FAAMA was about.  I have not missed a convention since my first year in FAAMA. In June of 2023, I was elected as the next Southern Regional Director and truly love being in this role more than anything else I have done in the FAA.
