The icon was part of this batch at aperfectlie42
1. Crop a picture.
2. Take the following 2 textures. Experiment with blend modes. This is going to be different for each picture. I have added these a couple of times both at screen and at soft light. Then masking out parts that covered her.

Lower the opacity to 50%

BASE
I got a very " washed out / flat " base. To make it better I duplicated it several times and played with blend modes. I usually use screen to make it lighter, multiply to make it darker and soft light / overlay to get some more contrast.
- First copy: screen, 100%
- Second copy: multiply: 40%
- Third copy: soft light 80%

COLORING
*Take a deep breath*

BLUR & SHARPEN
Add a new layer. Copy merge everything in that layer (press crtl+alt+shift+E). Blur and sharpen where needed! I've blurred the left part because I'm going to put a texture on there and didn't want House to shine through it.

TEXTURE
The easiest step =P Just set this texture (I made it...) on screen:

TEXT
Take your eyedropper tool and pick 2 colors from your icon. Use those 2 colors for the text. I used the font BadaBoom in 2 different sizes. Then rotate the text by going to 'edit' - 'free transform'. That made the text slightly blurry so I sharpened it a litle bit.

1. Prepare your base:

2. I duplicated my base and set it on screen 50% opacity to brighten it up
3. Add a color balance layer.
SHADOWS: 10 0 10
MIDTONES: 30 0 0
HIGHLIGHTS: 0 0 40

4. Add a brightness/contrast layer. Brightness: -10 and contrast: +10

5. Add a second color balance layer.
MIDTONES: 0 -20 -40

6. Add a selective color layer.
REDS: -30 0 100 20
YELLOWS: 0 0 100 0
BLUES: 100 0 0 100
NEUTRALS: 0 0 0 10

7. Add a photo filter layer. Choose the cooling filter (80) and put the density on 15%. Check preserve luminosity.

8. Add a new empty layer and fill it with color #f1f1f1 and change the blend mode to color burn 100%.

9. Add a channel mixer layer.
RED: 130 -70 0
GREEN: 0 100 0
BLUE: -20 100 100
Lower the opacity of this layer to 30%.

10. Add the following texture (babliz) on blend mode screen:

14. Cut out the black parts on the polaroid texture. then duplicate your butterfly icon several times, resize and arrange untill you get something like this:

COLORING
1. Crop your base::

2. Duplicate the base 2 times. Set the first one to screen and the second one to soft light. Sharpen one of this layers (and fade the sharpening if needed):

3. I want to tone down the orange and yellow so I added a photo filter adjustment layer (layer - new adjustment layer - photo filter). I used the cooling filter (82). Density 25% and preserve luminosity checked.

4. Next add a new selective color layer to enhance the yellow and cyan:
REDS: -40 0 0 0
NEUTRALS: 30 0 40 0

5. Add more blue with the channel mixer:
RED: 76 22 -40
GREEN: -10 100 0
BLUE: -10 0 100
Lower the opacity to 50%

6. The colors are a bit too bright, espacially the blue sky is very saturated. Add another photo filter adjustment layer. I used the cooling filter (80). Density 25% and preserve luminosity checked.

7. Add a new layer, fill with color #ffe0cf and change the blend mode to multiply.

TEXTURE
To create the texture(s) I used the shape tool.

I only used the colors black and white. Black disappears when set on screen, white stays.
Create a nice looking composition:

Flatten it and place your colored base underneath it.
Set the texture to screen.
Duplicate the base several times and keep these duplicates underneath the texture..
Then arrange your pictures (resize, move,...):

Next, paste your colored base above the texture.
Lower the opacity to 30%.
Then desaturate that image (image - adjustment - desaturate).
Add a layer mask to the desaturated image.
Go back to the texture layer and with the magic wand tool select all the black parts of that texture.

With the selection still there go back to the layer mask and fill the selection with black:

BASE
Start with your base. Preferably pictures with a light background. Blend them, sharpen, blur, however you prepare your base. I wanted to create a movement effect. I did this by duplicating my base, and applying the 'fragment filter' on it (filter -> pixelate), then erasing over face etc. My base:

COLORING
1. Fill a layer with the color #3e0000 and change the blend mode to exclusion 100%.
2. Layer - New Adjustment Layer - Photo Filter. Cooling filter (LBB), density 15% and preserve luminosity checked.
3. Layer - New Adjustment Layer - Color Balance.
MIDTONES: 14 30 -15
SHADOWS: 17 0 0
HIGHLIGHTS: 0 0 10
4. Layer - New Adjustment Layer - Selective Color.
YELLOWS: -32 0 100 0
NEUTRALS: 0 0 10 0
5. Layer - New Adjustment Layer - Levels. I only edited the RGB channel.
INPUT LEVELS: 34 1.18 255
OUTPUT LEVELS: 0 255

TEXTURES
1. Take a colorful texture and apply a gaussian blur to it. Or take a huge soft round brush and paint different colors on your canvas. Set this texture on darken 25%.

2. I wanted the background to have a more cloudy effect. I found the following image in my patterns window. I smudged the edges with the smudge tool and set the texture on color burn 100%. Erase over the faces.

It looks like THIS now.

3. I took this texture by Babliz and set it on screen

It looks like THIS now.
I didn't want the hair to shine through the moon. I added a new layer underneath the moon texture and painted a blue circle the same size as the moon.

MUCH BETTER

4. I want some more pink in it. Take a soft round brush and paint red blobs on a new layer. Change the blend mode to screen.

5. Added a bird texture on screen.

It looks like THIS now.

6. Added this texture on screen 60% opacity. Erase on the faces.

7. And finally added this texture on screen.

BORDER AND TEXT
1. Select your canvas and go to Edit -> Stroke. I added a 50px white border.
2. Repeat step 1 but add a 1px blue border.
3. I added text using the font 'Freebooter Script'.

TAKING AWAY THE YELLOW

10. Add a new fill layer. Fill with color #faffa6 and change the blend mode to soft light.

on the icon it won't be very noticeable. But it is on the larger image. Go find the layer causing it. Here it will be the layer from step 7. Paint the hair in black on the mask. </div>
