Oh, I love to listen to the wagon wheels,
That bring the milk that your neighbor steals,
Way out west on West End Avenue.
That's from "Babes in Arms," and when I was a kid, there really was a milkman (and a seltzer man) who brought the aforementioned liquids to your door, and I don't think anybody ever stole them, although perhaps in this more cynical age they would. And, from time to time, a bottle would get broken and you'd have to sweep up glass, but usually they'd just take the bottles and clean them out and put more milk in them. They weren't recycled, they were used over and over again for the same purpose--so only one milk bottle would have to be manufactured for every X quarts of milk, instead of one milk carton or plastic bottle for every ONE quart. (I know that some posh brands of organic milk come in glass bottles. I approve.)(Cut for length)
