KindleNook Dumb Question

I don't have any electronic reading devices, and don't actually want one given the vast dead-tree archives around here. However, instead of supplying me with paper proofs to proofread, my publisher sends me PDF files, which means that I have to print out the files I sent *them* to see how they compare. For an 1800 page book...that's a lot of paper.

If I *had* a Kindle, Nook, or their ilk, would I be able to load the PDFs or the underlying Word files onto the reading device, put up the other set of files on the computer screen, and prop up the reading device next to the screen to proofread? If I could, that would certainly make it worthwhile to get the device.

(No, I don't have a smartphone, and even if I did the screen would be too small for comfortable proofreading of vast amounts of copy.)
