[There's the crackle of paper against a microphone that floods the feed first, scratchy and entirely unpleasant. It's the kind of sound that a discarded half-foil, half-paper wrapper of a piece of Wrigley's chewing gum might make if it brushed across the unguarded mic of a phone recording something. Sadly, there's no chewing gum to be had, the owner of both the device and the scrap wrapper is a man who doesn't empty out his pockets at the end of the day. A throat is cleared, grunt of effort soft but audible as that phone is finally pulled free from the confines of denim, the clear sound of stiff buttons pressed and then--]

What... fuck-- oi, 'scuse me? Yeah, mate? I've got less signal than on the bloody tube. Must've taken a wrong turn at--

[There's a pause, seconds bleed into a whole minute as the unmistakable sound of footsteps gets quieter and quieter. The owner of the phone is on his own again.]

If this is London I'm a fucking Gooner...

What happens when Bob drinks from the fountain of youth...

Bob's been sitting on top of the bonnet of the car for at least half an hour now. It's not his car and he's acting like a little thug, but today he doesn't care. He's been promised a turn behind the wheel and the older boy who'd jingled the keys in front of his face in return for a certain little favour still hasn't shown up. He's not impressed, fingernails tapping against the metal work as he waits it out. Most likely, the boy he's waiting for is still asleep, too blazed up to care that he's about to have his car stolen.

SWS // Arthur needs drying off... [for littlspecificty]

[Continued from here]

Given the choice of letting Arthur sleep or getting off, Bob had thought he was doing the right thing by choosing the former. Arthur's reaction tells him it had been the wrong choice and though he's laughing, he can't help but tilt his head back into the pillow to give the other man more room to work.

"Was trying to behave."

CHARACTER NAME: Robert "Handsome Bob" Cooper
CHARACTER SERIES: RocknRolla

[OOC]

Backtagging: Yes!
Threadhopping: Provided it doesn't get too out of hand, sure!
Fourthwalling: No.
Offensive subjects (elaborate): ...can't think of anything.

[IC]

Hugging this character: Hugging is good.
Kissing this character: Will probably only work out well for you if you're a dude. Ladies... he's probably going to be being friendly, if anything. He's not interested in pursuing a relationship with girls. :( And if you're a dude... not in front of his mates, yeah? He's not 'out ' yet (unless specifically stated otherwise).
Flirting with this character: Feel free. He'll flirt back even if nothing will ever actually come of it.
Fighting with this character: Yes. Provided we're talking fists, knives and guns, not supernatural things. Please PM if you're unsure!
Injuring this character (include limits and severity): Please ask first!
Killing this character: I'd rather not!
Using telepathy/mind reading abilities on this character: If your character is that way inclined, yes. His background/history is here.

Warnings: Slash. Bob's gay. He likes the boys. If you take offence to that he's probably not the muse for you to be interacting with. :)
Handsome Bob's Bio

Vital Stats

Name: Robert “Handsome Bob” Cooper
Fandom: RocknRolla
PB: Tom Hardy

Age/Appearance: D.O.B: 19/12/1982. He has an average build and stands at 5’11. He keeps his hair cropped short and sports stubble that is verging on a beard most of the time. It’s no coincidence that the nickname assigned to him by his friends is “Handsome Bob”. He is an attractive, good-looking man who can turn heads when he walks into a room.

He dresses casually most of the time, emphasis placed on comfort and being able to move fast/easily, especially if they’re on a job. When necessary he can smarten up, but this usually only extends to a shirt and smart trousers, not ties (unless he’s putting in an appearance in court). He has a few tattoos which aren’t overtly obvious, no piercings and small scars from fights gone wrong, but nothing huge that stands out.

Bob is softly spoken with a quiet, extremely non-aggressive tone to his voice most of the time. When he speaks it seems measured, thought put into what he wants to say before he lets the words out into the world. Sometimes the tone of his voice turns jokey, and even flirtatious, if the mood takes him. He also has a notable London accent, born there and having grown up in and around a council estate in south London.

History:

Overall movie summary: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RocknRolla#Plot

Bob’s movie canon: Bob’s role in the Wild Bunch gang is driver and best friend of fellow Wild Bunch member One Two (who he also has an on-going crush on). Half of his focus throughout is to find out the identity of the informer who is responsible for most of the gang being sent to prison at some point over the course of twenty years, himself included. He’s already at risk of a 5-year prison sentence if the courts find him guilty (his court date comes and goes and, thanks to Lenny, the prosecution lose their documentation and the trial is quashed), and in the end it’s this that has him confessing his feelings to One Two who, in a state of sympathy, gives in to the idea. They “slow dance”. After this his feelings seem to dilute slightly, promising on One Two’s orders never to tell anyone what happened between them. He even goes as far as jokingly flirting with One Two in front of Mumbles, which earns him a friendly but firm smack around the back of the head. He seems to resolve some of the feelings he harbours for his best friend after this point, that initial curiosity satisfied to a stage where it isn’t all-consuming.

It also becomes apparent that Bob’s semi-closeted sexuality is already assumed by all members of the gang apart from One Two, who takes the news with a large proportion of surprise and anger, provoking him to try and exclude Bob from certain jobs. Mumbles then informs One Two that Bob was the only one looking after One Two’s dying mother while he was serving time in prison for two years, prompting One Two to reconsider his assessment. In the end, Mumbles’ words convince him that Bob is a good man despite his sexuality.

Bob’s good looks and natural charms are used when he is sent to try and get information out of gay lawyer, Bertie, who is tipped to know the identity of the informer. Promising to meet the man for a drink if he gets the documentation he needs, Bob secures the deal by keying his phone number into Bertie’s phone.

A few days later he receives a phonecall from Bertie promising he’s left the documents with his secretary under his name which Bob goes to collect with Mumbles and then heads to One Two’s house when they can’t decipher the pseudonym used for the informer.

When they arrive Archie, Lenny’s right-hand man, is already abducting One Two to take him to Lenny himself. He and Mumbles are then tied up and abducted too and taken to a warehouse where the mob boss, Lenny, enjoys torturing people for information. Here it becomes clear that they’re going to be killed and, in a moment where the tides seem to be turning, he volunteers the information up to Archie, instructing the man the relevant documentation is inside his jacket. It’s thanks to this that Archie discovers Lenny is the informer and Bob is set free along with One Two and Mumbles.

Bob’s backstory (headcanon): On a cold but clear winter’s morning, 19th December 1982, Robert James Cooper is born at St. George’s hospital, Tooting, south London, to parents Robert (Snr) and Sarah Cooper. The little family, without much to their name, live in a quiet area of Clapham, south London, without incident or drama.

However, Robert Snr decides, after a series of affairs little Bobby Jnr doesn’t understand, that family life isn’t for him. He leaves behind a wife, his three and a half year old son and 6-month old twins, Sophie and Jack. Little Bobby never sees his father again.

The now single-parent family can no longer afford to make mortgage payments and are evicted and moved to a rough council estate in Vauxhall, also south London. With help from his maternal grandparents, Bobby and his two younger siblings are raised by his mother who struggles both financially and emotionally, plagued with bouts of depression and constant illness. The little boy doesn’t remember much about his father, was too young to remember specific details, but sometimes he cries himself to sleep at night, quietly so he doesn’t upset his mum.

The day he starts primary school, aged 5, Bobby spends most of the day crying, not wanting to be separated from his mum, too scared that she won’t come and pick him up at the end of the day. He calms when she collects him later in the afternoon but soon comes to realise that he upsets mummy when he doesn’t stop crying. That evening, when they have eaten their burnt beans on equally burnt toast, he promises himself that tomorrow he won’t cry when he’s sent back to school. He doesn’t.

He discovers his first taste of bullying at the age of 6, teased mercilessly for having a school jumper with holes in it, pen marks and stubborn oil stains where his mum hasn’t been able to afford a new one. It hurts his feelings, especially when they start being mean about his mum, and though he never tells his mum, he cries himself to sleep again for weeks.

By 7-years old he resolves that he’s going to make sure his younger siblings don’t have to suffer the same fate when they eventually start school. They won’t have jumpers that are out of shape, littered with holes and stains. He starts doing odd jobs for the few elderly neighbours they have, battling a lawn mower twice weekly, pulling weeds out of flower beds until his hands are covered in itchy hives. He does everything that is asked of him for the few extra pounds per week that he always puts in the envelope his mum hides under her mattress, with a funny red crest on it and the only word he can read is “child”.

His money making scheme is discovered one day by another child from the estate, Jason Matthews, who follows him back from his couple of hours of chores and sets on him the second they’re hidden from view. Bobby is mugged for all £5.46 he’s earned, also earning himself a split lip and bloody nose in the process. Long after Jason is gone and Bobby is still lying face down on the ground, help comes in the form of the Scottish. Bobby’s never heard a Scottish accent before, but the newcomer wants to know if he’s alright, and the little boy from south London can’t help but have some of his faith in humanity restored.

His Scottish knight in shining armour goes by the name of Malcolm Mackay, new to the estate having just moved to London from Glasgow with his mother and father. Bobby learns, on their short trip back to his house, that Malcolm is 2 years older than him, that although his dad is still around he’s really mean.

The next day Bobby is encouraged by his new friend to exact his revenge on Jason and, with some help from Malcolm who fends off the boy’s friends, returns the beating and retrieves the £5.46 that was stolen. He doesn’t take a penny more but warns Jason that if he ever does it again, next time will be worse. From that day, Bobby has a new best friend for life.

Bobby and Malcolm become inseparable, spending time at each others houses after school, at weekends and in the school holidays, especially as they aren’t in the same academic year in school. They get up to all sorts of mischief, double-teaming anyone who dares to give Bobby’s twin siblings a hard time. Bobby is also there for his friend when Malcolm’s father dies of a sudden heart attack, the onset apparently triggered chasing Malcolm around the house to try and beat the insolence out of him. But the day Malcolm finishes primary school, aged 11, is one of the worst days of 9-year old Bobby’s life.

He sees out the remaining two years at primary school as though a man serving time in prison. He still has friends at school, but it’s clear in his general demeanour that he misses his best friend, to walk to and from school with. Further to that, Malcolm makes lots of new, older friends in high school, and they tease Bobby for being younger, when they’re around. In this time he also spends far more time with his siblings, looking out for them with extra efficiency, sometimes getting into physical fights with other kids to make sure the twins won’t be picked on when he inevitably leaves for high school.

It’s luck and lack of academic work that sees 11-year old Bobby sent to the same comprehensive, inner-city high school as Malcolm, and he knows it’s only a matter of time before he is fully accepted by Malcolm’s friends.

The first day he realises he’s not like the other boys he knows is aged 12, when he comes across a 14-year old Malcolm behind the bikesheds with a girl, too busy to actually even greet his best friend. Bobby runs all the way home, tears in his eyes.

This incident is the start of his realisation that he may not just like girls, like all of his friends do. He reasons that he just doesn’t want to have to share his time with Malcolm with anyone else, rather than fleetingly imagining himself in the same position as the girl. He fights with these specific feelings as the year goes on, his own popularity and good-looks earning him attention from girls, even when he’s not that interested in them. Eventually, it’s peer pressure that makes him cave in, and in an attempt to stave off memories of that day behind the bikeshed, he is the first boy in his year to successful juggle three girlfriends in his year for just over a month. He becomes legendary amongst his friends, and the other boys at his high school, but all for reasons he knows are based on his lying about his feelings. It’s this that forces him to live up to the ladykiller reputation he earns himself, not wanting to give anyone a reason to suspect he’s having other, less heterosexual thoughts.

Meanwhile, the atmosphere at home is steadily on the decline. His mum has let her perpetually drunk boyfriend move in. Bobby catches the man taking money from the envelope under his mum’s mattress and, after a heated exchange, in which his mother tells him to be quiet because she has a headache, storms out and smashes the windows of every single car in the small car park just down the street.

In the days that follow he becomes so worried about the police finding out it was his handiwork in the car park, despite Malcolm’s soothing promises that nobody will find out, he confesses what he’s done to his mum, promising that he’ll still try and help out, even if they send him to prison. Later, his mum’s boyfriend decides to teach him a lesson for being so insolent and takes his belt to the boy, beating him until, in a moment of opportunity, Bobby escapes and runs to the only person he knows will understand.

He stays with Malcolm and his mother for the rest of the year, even celebrating his 13th birthday with them, not returning home until Malcolm’s mum receives a phonecall from his own with bad news. His grandparents, who have helped raise him and his siblings, have died within hours of each other: his grandmother of a stroke and his grandfather, they said, of a broken heart.

The death of his grandparents and the disappearance of his mother’s boyfriend make things better and worse at the same time. There are some issues with his grandparents’ will, and Bobby and his family are left barely able to afford to feed themselves, let alone pay bills. Finally sharing his problems with his best friend, Malcolm produces a wad of cash and tells Bobby to help his mum out. Surprised, but desperate for the money, Bobby trusts Malcolm enough to take it, using it to buy food, work out which bills need paying first and keeps his family afloat. When curiosity finally gets the better of him, Bobby asks Malcolm where he got so much money from. His friend is running errands for one of the gangs operating out of London, of which some of the older boys at their school are already initiated into. It’s mostly smalltime, not usually too illegal, and involves dropping up and picking things up from various locations.

Knowing that he’s still too young to get a job, even one at the weekends, and knowing that he needs to be earning far more money than chores for neighbours will ever pay, he asks Malcolm if he can join too. He is accepted when Malcolm vouches for him and becomes a successful member of Malcolm’s crew, almost selfishly enjoying the newfound respect the older kids have for him, and for the amount of time he gets to spend in his best friend’s company. His schoolwork suffers as a consequence, and despite various attempts by his teachers to plead with him to use the brain he’s got and achieve far better results academically, he’s already lost to the gang culture of south London, too determined to provide for his family.

By the age of 14 he is earning up to £200 a week which almost all goes on paying for food, bills and any other essentials his mum or siblings need. They still struggle, but they aren’t at risk of going hungry anymore. Malcolm, who has become known in gangland as his alias “One Two” leaves school the day he turns 16 to focus on working for his associates fulltime. Left behind at school, knowing that any truancy is likely to get his mother into trouble with the authorities, Bobby becomes extremely frustrated, already knowing his future doesn’t lie in anything academic. He’s a bright boy, but the drive to earn money for his family far supersedes the interest he has in his studies.

When he finally reaches the age of 16, full induction into the gang known as the Wild Bunch happens quickly, his own alias “Handsome Bob” bestowed on him on his 18th birthday, both to protect his real name and because he’s grown into his now rather handsome features. Off the back of several successful car jacking jobs, Bob manages to get his driving license and is officially appointed as driver for the gang, leaving the space for One Two’s partner in crime open for Mumbles, a man who grew up on an estate in Brixton. Bob can’t bring himself to feel jealous, Mumbles gauging the friendship between the two young men more accurately than either of them realise and not wanting to interfere.

After the police somehow manage to pin the robbery of a security van carrying cash between a jewellers and a bank on One Two, despite their getaway being clean, Bob watches his friend sentenced to two years in prison, something which affects him far more deeply than it does the rest of the gang. He feels lost without his best friend, the first time in 15 years that he hasn’t been able to see the man almost every day. In those two years he splits his time between the gang, his own family, and looking after One Two’s mum, especially after she’s diagnosed with cancer. He knows his best friend’s mother’s heart is as broken as his is, with the loss of who they both still think of as Malcolm, to prison.

When One Two is finally released from prison two years later, Bob knows that his feelings for his friend haven’t dimmed in the slightest, no matter how many people he’s bedded on the lonely nights in that time.

One Two is determined to continue where they left off, not for once thinking about going straight and getting out of the gang culture. It takes a few months for Bob to open his friend up again, those two years in prison having broken down the man he knew from before, but when he does he feels like they’ve got each other’s backs even more than they did before.

Unfortunately, this doesn’t help him when another seemingly successful job, this time armed robbery, is traced back to Bob, and he’s arrested and released on bail until his court date. In this time, knowing that it’s highly likely he’ll be sent to prison for at least 5 years, he finds it too difficult to keep his feelings for his best friend to himself, and though he tries again in vain to smother them with taking more and more women to bed, it makes him feel worse. This eventually leads to his confession to One Two, where he finally admits that instead of a group of strippers the night before he goes to prison, he wants the other man instead.

[Cut to movie summary!]

Personality:

Throughout the film we see Bob driven predominantly by 3 core motivations: protecting his friends, protecting the nature of his true sexuality, and discovering the identity of the informer responsible for his most recent arrest and potential 5 years in prison. His commitment to this never waivers, but we see various aspects of his history and events from his past start to factor heavily into how he goes about trying to deal with and achieve this.

Outwardly, Bob is a charming, well-mannered and good-tempered man with loyalty to his friends and taking care of his family ranking highly on his list of importance. He has grown up with certain abandonment issues which rarely make it to the surface, though the people who know him the best are more likely to be shown this. More often than not, his laidback, pleasant attitude is enough to throw most people off the scent of the deeper issues settled deep beneath the surface.

He has a cheeky sense of humour, something which he uses more often than not to cement his position and show his affection to friends and other members of the gang. It also helps position him as the younger brother figure within the Wild Bunch, something also dictated by his age. It sometimes comes with a healthy dose of innuendo, and can be called into play when he’s flirting harmlessly, even with his friends.

He is also a compassionate, caring individual, not one to run away from things he considers his responsibility. He’s not afraid to stand up and be counted when he’s needed, and we see this trait in him in how he looks after his family, and One Two’s mother when he’s incarcerated.

He is extremely protective of his deepest secret: his sexuality. He is able to assume a mask which allows him to pretend and act like he is a heterosexual man, like the rest of his friends. Unfortunately, the masks slips sometimes when he’s around One-Two, and everyone else in the gang is already aware of the truth and accept him though it’s never discussed openly.

It takes time and patience to break through to the inner layers of Bob’s personality, and the darker, more complex parts of his head. The self-defence mechanisms he has in place allow him to slide on an affable, personable, friendly demeanour. It’s something he knows promotes the idea that he’s nothing but a pretty face, something he actively encourages around people he doesn’t know well. However, it doesn’t take much conversation about subjects slightly more serious in tone to realise that he has intelligence behind those looks, something that becomes clear when he’s flirting to get information out of unsuspecting gay lawyers, in particular.

The area and socio-economic circumstances he was born into, and grew up in, should have hardened him up, but throughout his childhood and teenage years, the close bond he’s shared with his family, and Malcolm, has kept him from forgetting what’s really important. Love and loyalty. He hides that sensitive soul well unless particularly moved by something that even his laidback attitude can’t mask.

That laidback attitude is in place most of the time, patient unless he’s continually poked about something he doesn’t want to talk about repeatedly. Even then he’s only likely to gently reprimand.

What makes him really angry, and far more likely to lose his temper, is if anyone tries to interfere with, hurt, or con his family, friends or the gang. He has known to be physically violent in the past, to protect his family and friends, something that he would usually feel uncomfortable about. It’s something which is is happy to tear up his own inner code of conduct to make sure they’re safe and looked after. He also shows bravery and nerves of steel when facing up to bullies, as a child, and also Russian mafia and similar when he’s an adult, rescuing his friends from almost certain death in the process.

He doesn’t spend a lot of his time being overtly sentimental about his friendships, especially the relationship he shares with One Two, even if he feels sentimental inside. Similarly, he’s not one to wallow in self-pity all too often, especially when he knows that even just spending time with his family and friends makes him happy.

He can sometimes be ignorant of the need for an extended amount of personal time and space for reflection time. This is a habit directly related to how close he wants to keep his friends and family, just in case they leave him. If he likes you he won’t want to let you go, in case you don’t come back.

He isn’t loud or brash by nature, instead preferring to be quiet, calm and a constant in the Wild Bunch and his friends’ and family’s lives. He is a follower, not a leader, something which, despite being the oldest child in his family and also bread-winner for them from a young age, he is comfortable with. He understands hierarchy and a gang/pack mentality when it comes to showing respect to the right people, where it’s due.

His history with the authorities isn’t perfect, even if he has charms that almost work on them too. He is known to the police and has a criminal record, though so far has managed to avoid jailtime. This ultimately turns out to be because Lenny controls who does and doesn’t get sent to prison, rather than Bob being extraordinarily good at talking his way out of tricky situations, even if he is good at it.

Sexual Preferences/Orientation:

Despite being referred to as a “ladykiller”, and having had a string of girlfriends, Bob is a closeted homosexual. This finally comes to light when he confesses his secret (and subsequent crush) to his best friend, One-Two, when on his final night of freedom, instead of a handful of strippers he just wants the other man.

For Bob, sex with most people has always been some sort of bargaining chip. At school it was for popularity purposes and to protect the secret of his true sexuality. When he leaves school this pretence is upheld and he continues to have a string of girlfriends (sometimes more than two at a time) to cover up the fact that he’s gay.

His insistence at not coming out has more to do with his concern over how his best friend will react, rather than feeling ashamed of being the way he is. He long ago came to accept that he just wasn’t attracted to women like most men are, but instead to keep up his guards in the cut-throat ring of London’s gangs, and has come to the conclusion he’s safer keeping quiet.

He hasn’t ever had a problem attracting women, or men, and this is something he has been actively encouraged to use for jobs. E.g. his flirtatious conversation with Bertie, the gay lawyer, in exchange for the identity of the informer. He plays on his obvious good looks and the attraction that results due to it to influence people into doing whatever the gang wants. It should also be noted that he doesn’t use this for personal gains, and it’s always for the benefit of his friends.

It’s due to this continuous lie that he lives and not being able to live openly as a gay man that has left him without much experience of a fully-rounded and honest relationship. He spends so much time covering up the truth by dating and sleeping with countless women that it’s hindered how close he ever truly becomes to his partners. For him, there’s always an element of regret at not being able to be in a relationship with a man. This shows to be playing heavily on his mind when he finally confesses the truth to One Two, stating that he can’t take having to pretend anymore. However, this was in a moment of high tension, the night before he believes he is going to be sent to prison for 5 years.

Monogamy isn’t something that has cropped up in his life so far and doesn’t figure into his head as important at the moment. His father left after a string of affairs and didn’t ever provide him with a suitable role model, and he operates within a gang who take pleasure in groups of strippers and as many women as they can find. The reputation he gets from sleeping around helps him protect his secret, taking other people’s feelings into consideration not something that comes to mind, even if he never intentionally sets out to hurt anyone. He always seeks people who aren’t looking for serious commitments to try and avoid this issue. Unfortunately, he’s found more often than not that his girlfriends have gone on to develop feelings for him that he simply can’t reciprocate.

His perfect partner is someone not too unlike One Two: confident, strong, not afraid to take the lead. It’s something that Bob respects, above a lot of other things, and something that he will respond well to. He also likes the idea of feeling protected and feeling as though someone is looking out for him like he will inevitably be looking out for them.

With the right person, and being allowed to be true to his sexuality, Bob would make a caring, attentive and loyal partner. He just has to get over his tradition of keeping his homosexuality a secret first.

Notable Skills:

Bob is the official driver for the Wild Bunch gang, able to successfully get his accomplices (and friends) away from the scene of a crime with great skill. He has shown that he is similarly talented at escaping the clutches of the law on foot, his running speed above average and his agility for jumping over fences and walls put into practice on an almost regular basis.

Bob is also an experienced fighter, operating in a gang around London and growing up on a council estate in south London both affording him hours and hours of practice time. He’s also not afraid to fight dirty, using weapons if his opponent seems to have a physical advantage over him.

He’s also softly spoken, extremely handsome and charming to boot. It’s hard not to like him, and if he wants or needs something from you, unless you’re a paranoid bunny who doesn’t like sharing, you’ll probably find yourself getting lost in his eyes and telling him things you didn’t mean to. This isn’t a power, there’s nothing he’s doing telepathically or magically, simply making you feel at ease and as though you can trust him. He’s a friendly, very attractive face.
