JALT2026 Theme
Beyond the Classroom: From Local Voice to Global Impact

Language learning is much more than just grammar, vocabulary, and tests. It is about preparing students with the skills to use language effectively in real-world situations. With global events taking place in Japan, such as the 2025 Expo in Osaka and the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya, there is a need for language education to prepare students as global citizens. Language is not merely an academic subject. However, it is actually an important tool for communication, collaboration, and cultural diplomacy. Educators in the 21st century must prepare students in Japan to engage with the world as global citizens.

Educators presented about global citizenship and intercultural communication at the 2024 International Conference on the Development and Assessment of Intercultural Competence (ICC). While TESOL’s 2025 Preconvention Institute had sessions on digital citizenship, global citizenship, experiential learning, and interactive competence. These initiatives demonstrate to educators the need to move beyond traditional classroom practices and encourage students to participate, learn, and respond in diverse contexts

This proposal for the upcoming JALT International Conference builds upon the discussions that have taken place. It invites educators to explore how language education can transcend the classroom, creating opportunities for intercultural understanding, shared learning, and enriched futures.

Sincerely,
