It really surprised me how different the lighting was in this episode, to how it was in Strobe. Everything there was very blue, and had strong white elements. Here though, things were very yellow warm, and rather difficult to tone down. You should have seen how many I deleted; there was double the amount you see here!

I'm also taking requests for futuer Quantum Leap sets. I've got every episode available to cap except season 5., Although, saying that, I could rip my videos to DVD if need be ;)

Holy cow!

I left what I thought were going to be the easier set to complete for disappearicons's round 2 of her 50 icons binge until last. How wrong I was. They've had set back, after set back. Which is a shame, 'cos I've been planning to make some Terrorvision icons for a while.

Personally, I love 1 - 28. But as my iconning progressed, the quality of my caps decreased (video to DVD images were the problem).

And I guess you're wondering why they're all textless. There's a good reason. The aforementioned 1 - 28 were planned to be textless, the others were not. Every so often my PSP7 program throws a hissy fit and have to delete and reinstall the whole thing over. I didn't have time to do that today, but I'm hoping to rework some of them and post them at a later date.

Also, I know a certain someone is going to ask why there are only 3 Shutty icons. Well, there should've been at least 3 more, but I accidentally overwrote the .psp files. My bad :(

Terrorvision - Fists Of Fury.

Well, that was a nice surprise. I won the Fists OF Fury single off eBay last week, thinking it was just the standard UK version. I wanted the B-sides. But, I unwrap it, only to find out it's the rarer European version with the music video. WOOT!

I was outbid on an auction for this a year or two ago, and I've sulked about it ever since. Once one hasn't back up for sale. But, this just wasn't properly listed. To my good fortune :D

Icon Tutorial #2: Slash - On My Own

This is the second tutorial I promised recycleanimals. I'm sorry about the small delay in getting this done, but I've had other icon-related deadlines to meet! But slowly and surely I'm making my through my to-do list.

The usual guidelines apply:

:: DO NOT COPY this tutorial exactly. It's here to HELP and GUIDE you, that is all. I do not want to see carbon copies out there.
:: Experiment, experiment, experiment. Some of the techniques here don't work for all images, you will have to bend rules, and work new ideas into them.

On My Own
I will show you how to make this icon:

Again, this is quite straight forward, but if you do have any questions, feel free to ask and I'll help you all I can. I use PSP7, but it is easily transferrable to other programmes.

This tutorial is best suited for light 'airy' caps/pictures. Anything too dark will just muddy up too much.

I started off with this cap from the November Rain video.

This is my base:

I then followed the same steps I use for every single icon I make. It is all detailed in the first three steps in my other tutorial.

Duplicate > screen:

Duplicate > soft light:

I then adjust the opacity of these layers, ending up with a palette reading like this:

Base
Screen > 85%
Soft light > 85%

And a base that currently looks like this:

Go to layers > merge > merge (visible). Right click on your merged image and click copy. UNDO the merge, and paste your copy as a new layer. This way you still have your new colour-tweaked image to work with, aswell as the original layers available in case you need them.

Duplicate your 'new' base > sharpen. Sometimes you might need a second sharpened layer with a low opacity added if once isn't enough. But in this case one layer was just fine:

I duplicated this layer and went to effects > enhance photo > and tweaked both the saturation and contrast levels. I wanted a bit more depth to the colour, and as I knew I would be using a texture I wanted Slash to stand out well.

I have recently discovered some gorgeous textures by rhinestone_life, which are so versatile. I just love them! I grabbed this one:

And set it to soft light:

Nice, but still very washed out. I duplicated it and set it to multiply > 85%:

That's better. Very moody and atmospheric.

Now for the text. New layer > text tool. Using the dropper I found a mid-range brown colour and typed in my text. I think I used either Georgia or 18th Century:

I left the layer Normal > 100%, resulting in this:

Icon tutorial: Slash - Fire Inside

I've been thinking about doing a tutorial for a while now, and this one was requested by recycleanimals so I figured it would be a good place to start :)

This is the first tutorial I've written, and I've tried to be as clear as I can, but if I seem confusing, please tell me. I promise I don't bite ;)

Fire Inside
We will be making this icon:

It is quite straight forward, for intermediate users. Personally I use PSP7, but the tutorial itself is pretty generic.

I started off with this image of Slash.

Now, I must point out that I don't crop and resize like most people. I rely heavily on guess work and often retrace my steps until it looks right. I resize the original image, usually to around 250px high, then copy and post into a new 100x100 image. From there I can slide the picture around until I find a crop that I like.

I've always done things that way. I just find it easier.

I ended up with this as my base image:

From there I do the following:

Duplicate base > screen
Duplicate base > screen
Duplicate base > soft light

Resulting in this:

Very bleached and yellow isn't it?

I then slide the duplicate layers' opacity up and down until I find a good balance. Sometimes I even delete one of the screen layers entirely. Or even add one if the image is still too dark.

For this particular image I ended up with the layers looking like this:

Base
Screen > 50% opacity
Soft light > 40%

Giving us this:

Go to layers > merge > merge (visible). Right click on your merged image and click copy. UNDO the merge, and paste your copy as a new layer. This way you still have your new colour-tweaked image to work with, aswell as the original layers available in case you need them.

Duplicate your 'new' base > sharpen.

Sometimes I repeat this step and fiddle with the opacity of the second sharpened layer, but for this particular icon one layer was enough.

In fact, it was more than enough. I turned down the opactiy to 45%:

See? Not quite so harsh, but still retains the clarity. Please remember, do not over-sharpen. It's down right scary!

I merged, copied, just as before with the new sharpened image before continuing.

I felt the black needed to feel a tad 'blacker' so I copied the new base and desaturated.

I set that to soft light > 45% .

It doesn't seem much different, but trust me, those shadows are a little more intense now. Honest.

Now for the fun bits ...finally!

I used this gorgeous light texture by falling-night.net

Flipped and mirrored it and pasted onto my icon. and set it lighten. But I felt that showing the whole texture was a bit overwhelming, so I slid it out of the picture slightly, and erased some areas that got in the way using a soft round brush.

Now, I'm quite happy with that, but the colours seem to require some unification. Nothing major.

New layer > flood fill > #002A54

So yes, I ended up with the highly overused blue exculsion layer:

But that just makes my retinas bleed. I was looking for something much more subtle than that. The opacity went down to 25%:

Ah, much better.

New layer > text tool. Pick out a light colour from the icon and type in your text.

[set on black so you can see it]

I used 18th Century on 5px, kerning: 350. The tiny text is the same font in 1 px and kerning: 500. Just play with the leading until you get the balance right.

And you're done.

A good example of adapting this tutorial is this icon:

The layers started from the bottom up look like this -

Base image
Duplicate base > screen > 60%
Duplicate base > soft light > 100%
Merged base
Copy of merged
Copy of merged > sharpen > 75%
Tan gradient by magdalenaicons > soft light > 100%
Light texture by pessimistchick > lighten >70%
Text layer
Dark blue gradient by ellipsisicons > exclusion > 100%
Dark red gradient by magdalenaicons > lighten > 45%

See, very similar icons, but there were major changes going on. This one has loads of gradients, where as the first settled well with just a desat layer.

Rule of thumb - JUST PLAY. It really is the only way to learn!

Phantom Of The Opera

OK, so I finished uploading these babies a day or two ago, but I'm having trouble finding somewhere with suffient space and bandwidth for the zip files.

It seems silly for me to sit on these images meantime, so I've decided to share them ;)

I divided them into 11 galleries (to match the zip file content) which explains why some scenes are split up. I might re-arrange them at some point, but rest assured they wil be staying up inmy Photobucket account for a loooong time ;D
