She was previously President of the Boston City Council, from January 4, 2016 to January 1, 2018. She is the first woman, and the first non-white person, to be elected the city’s Mayor. Her odinances on the council and actions as mayor have included protecting wetlands and the environment, and helping regulate short-term rentals. She has worked to increase fare-free public transportation.<\/p>\n She was raised on the South Side of Chicago, the daughter of Taiwanese parents. Michelle speaks Mandarin Chinese.
