Vern Stephens was an American professional baseball player. A shorstop, he played for the St. Louis Browns, the Boston Red Sox, the Chicago White Sox, and the St. Louis Browns/Baltimore Orioles of Major League Baseball (MLB). He was known for his power hitting, and was the 1945 home run champion, in addition to a three time RBI champion. He was inducted into the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2006.
Vern was the son of Grace and Vernon Decatur Stephens.
Vern’s paternal grandfather was James Polk Stephens (the son of Thomas Decatur Stephens and Martha Ann Bland).
Vern’s paternal grandmother was Nancy Caroline Brewer (the daughter of Lewis Hamilton Brewer and Elizabeth Willis). Lewis was born in Tennessee, the son of William Thomas Brewer and Sarah Hansborough. Elizabeth was born in Tennessee, the daughter of David Willis and Catherine Earhart.
Vern’s maternal grandfather was Henry McMullen (the son of William McMillen and Amanda Shellenberger). Amanda was born in Pennsylvania, the daughter of John Leidy Shellenberger and Elizabeth Harr.
Vern’s maternal grandmother was Jessie Dickson (the son of James Dickson and Ellen Pryde). Jessie’s parents were Scottish. James was the son of Margaret and William Dickson. Ellen was the daughter of Janet and William Pryde.
