Tim Maia, or “Síndico,” was a Brazilian musician, singer, composer, and businessperson. He was known for his soul-inspired songs, and for his contributions to Brazilian music. He was a member of Os Tijucanos do Ritmo, the “Matoso Gang,” and The Sputniks.
Tim was the son of Maria Imaculada Maia Nogueira and Altivo Rodrigues Maia. He was said to have eighteen siblings. He lived in the U.S. for a few years, starting in his late teens. Tim had three children, including two with his former wife Maria de Jesus “Geisa” Gomes da Silva. One of their sons was musician Léo Maia, Geisa’s son from a previous relationship, whom Tim had adopted. His nephew, sister’s son, is MPB, rock, soul, funk, and jazz musician Ed Motta.
Tim’s paternal grandfather was Manoel Rodrigues Maia (the son of Antonio Rodrigues Maia and Candida de Souza Nunes). Manoel was born in Paraíba do Sul, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Antonio was born in Campo de Ourique, Lisbon, Portugal, the son of José Rodrigues Maia and Antonia Joaquina. Candida was born in Rio de Janeiro.
Tim’s paternal grandmother was Joana/Joanna Maria da Conceição (the daughter of João Pereira do Nascimento and Rita Maria das Dores). Joanna was born in Itapipoca, Ceará, Brazil.
Tim’s maternal grandfather was named Antonio Regina. Antonio was an Italian emigrant, according to Tim’s unauthorized biography Vale Tudo – O Som e a Fúria de Tim Maia, 2006, by Nelson Motta.
Tim’s maternal grandmother was named Carolina Caetano Nogueira. Carolina was born in Paraíba do Sul, Rio de Janeiro.
