Sam Rice was an American professional baseball player, and poultry farmer. An outfielder, he played for the Washington Senators and the Cleveland Indians of Major League Baseball (MLB). He started off as a relief pitcher, but played mostly in right field.

Sam was the son of Louisa/Louise and Charles Edgar Rice. He was raised partly in Watseka, Illinois, and around the Illinois-Indiana border. His parents, two sisters, his then-wife Beulah Stam, and their two children; and a farmhand, were killed in a tornado in Illinois in April 1912. He was later married to Mary Kendall Adams, until his death.

Sam’s paternal grandfather was Elijah Johnson Rice (the son of Nathaniel Matthew Rice and Mildred Johnston).

Sam’s paternal grandmother was Rebecca J. Wynegar (the daughter of William Wynegar and Jane Cowman). William was born in Virginia, the son of David Wynegar and Catherine Grim. Sam’s great-grandmother Jane was born in Ohio, the daughter of John Cowman and Elizabeth Strickland.

Sam’s maternal grandfather was Jacob Neumeyer/Newmeyer/Newmyer (the son of Philip Anton Neumaier and Rachel Regina Hauck). Jacob’s parents were German.

Sam’s maternal grandmother was Catherine Wonderly (the daughter of Joseph Wunderle and Agatha Freinemuth). Joseph was born in Switzerland, the son of Aloys Wunderlin and Klara Metzger.
