Marta Suplicy is a Brazilian politician, psychologist, and sexologist. She served as a Federal Deputy from São Paulo, from 1 February, 1995 to 1 February, 1999, Mayor of São Paulo, from 1 January, 2001 to 1 January, 2005, Minister of Tourism, from 23 March, 2007 to 3 June, 2008, Senator for São Paulo, from 1 February, 2011 to 1 February, 2019, Minister of Culture, from 13 September, 2012 to 11 November, 2014, and Municipal Secretary of International Relations of São Paulo, from 1 January, 2021 to 9 January, 2024.

She is the daughter of Noêmia Fracalanza and Luís Affonso Smith de Vasconcellos. Marta is married to Márcio Toledo. She has three children, including musician Supla (born Eduardo Smith de Vasconcellos Suplicy), with her former husband, politician, economist, and professor Eduardo Suplicy.

Marta’s paternal grandfather was Jaime Luís Smith de Vasconcellos (the son of Baron Rodolfo Smith de Vasconcellos and Eugênia Virgínia Ferreira Felício). Jaime was born in Rio de Janeiro. Marta’s great-grandfather Baron Rodolfo was born in Fortaleza, Ceará, the son of José Smith de Vasconcelos, who was born in Lisbon, Portugal, to a Portuguese father and to an English mother, from Worcester, Worcestershire; and of Francisca Carolina Mendes da Cruz Guimarães, who was Brazilian. Marta’s paternal grandmother was Anna/Ana Teresa Siciliano (the daughter of Alessandro Vincenzo Siciliano and Laura de Mello Coelho). Anna was born in Piracicaba, São Paulo, Brazil. Alessandro was born in San Nicola Arcella, province of Cosenza, Calabria, Italy, the son of Biagio Gaetano/Caetano Siciliano and Anna/Ana Teresa Alario. Laura was born in São Paulo, the daughter of João Fructuoso/Frutuoso Coelho, whose father was Azorean Portuguese, and whose mother was Brazilian; and of Ana Maria Ferraz de Mello.

Marta’s maternal grandfather was Eugenio Giulio Fracalanza (the son of Angelo Fracalanza and Maria Luigia Girardi). Eugenio was born in Piombino Dese, province of Padua, Veneto, Italy. Angelo was born in Piombino Dese, the son of Eugenio Fracalanza and Elena Cagnin. Maria Luigia was born in Morgano, province of Treviso, the daughter of Angelo Girardi and Lucia Montin.

Marta’s maternal grandmother was Leopoldina Beccato (the daughter of Giuseppe Beccato and Carolina de Grandi). Leopoldina was born in Adria, province of Rovigo, Veneto, Italy. Giuseppe was born in Ceregnano, province of Rovigo, the son of Vincenzo Beccato and Francesca Guarnieri. Carolina was the daughter of Gaetano de Grandi and Luigia Mazzon.
