José P. Laurel was a Filipino politician and judge. He served as the 3rd President of the Philippines, from October 14, 1943 to August 17, 1945. He was also Undersecretary of the Department of Interior and Local Government, from May 22, 1922 to February 9, 1923, Secretary of the Interior, from February 9, 1923 to July 17, 1923, Majority Floor Leader of the Senate of the Philippines, from June 2, 1925 to June 2, 1931, Senator of the Philippines, from June 2, 1925 to June 2, 1931, and again, from December 30, 1951 to December 30, 1957; Associate Justice of the Philippine Supreme Court, from February 29, 1936 to February 5, 1942; Commissioner of Justice, from December 24, 1941 to December 2, 1942, and Minister of the Interior, from December 4, 1942 to October 14, 1943.

José was the son of Jacoba “Ubay” García and Sotero “Teroy” Laurel y Remoquillo, or Sotero Remoquillo Laurel in Filipino. His father had been an official in the revolutionary government of Emilio Aguinaldo, and a signatory to the 1898 Malolos Constitution.

José was married to Pacencia Hidalgo y Valencia, or Pacencia Valencia Hidalgo in Filipino, with whom he had nine children. Their son was politician Salvador Roman Hidalgo Laurel, who was Prime Minister of the Philippines, from February 25, 1986 to March 25, 1986, and Vice President of the Philippines, from February 25, 1986 to June 30, 1992. Salvador’s granddaughter by paternal line is actress Denise Laurel.

José’s paternal grandfather was Mariano Laurel y Pimentel (or Mariano Pimentel Laurel in Filipino, the son of Miguel Laurel y de la Cruz, or Miguel de la Cruz Laurel in Filipino, and of Tomasa Pimentel). Miguel was directly descended from Gat Masungit, who was a 15th century scion to the Sultanate of Brunei.

José’s paternal grandmother was named Gaspara Remoquillo y Panganiban (or Gaspara Panganiban Remoquillo in Filipino, the daughter of parents surnamed Remoquillo and Panganiban).

José’s maternal grandfather was named Kapitan Macario Garcia.

José’s maternal grandmother was named Georgia Laurel Pimentel.
