John Connally was an American politician. He served as U.S. Secretary of the Navy, from January 25, 1961 to December 20, 1961, Governor of Texas, from January 15, 1963 to January 21, 1969, and U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, from February 11, 1971 to June 12, 1972. Originally a member of the Democratic Party, he switched to the Republican Party in 1973.

He was a candidate for the Republican Party’s nomination for President of the United States in 1980.

John was the son of Lela (Wright) and John Bowden Connally. He was married to Nellie (Brill) Connally, until his death, with whom he had four children. He was in the car with President John F. Kennedy during Kennedy’s assassination, and was seriously wounded.

John’s paternal grandfather was John Wesley Connally (the son of Charles Price Connally and Rebecca Smith). John’s grandfather John was born in Texas. Charles was the son of Charles Connally and Nancy E. Stokes.

John’s paternal grandmother was Louise/Louisa Wardell Duke (the daughter of Charles Green Berry Duke and Louisa/Lou P. Bowden). John’s grandmother Louise was born in Georgia. Charles was the son of Shadrack Duke and Dicey Roberts.
