Jared Polis is an American politician, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. A member of the Democratic Party, he has served as Governor of Colorado, since January 8, 2019. He has also been a Member of the Colorado State Board of Education, from January 3, 2001 to January 3, 2007, a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Colorado, from January 3, 2009 to January 3, 2019, and Chair of the National Governors Association, from July 12, 2024 to July 26, 2025. He is the first openly gay man elected governor in the U.S.
Jared is the son of Stephen Schutz and Susan Polis Schutz, who together founded the greeting card and book publisher Blue Mountain Arts. His mother is a poet, filmmaker, and businessperson.
Jared is married to animal rights activist and writer Marlon Reis, with whom he has two children. Marlon is also Jewish.
Jared’s paternal grandfather was Morton Schutz (the son of Morris Schutz and Tillie Steinberg). Morris was born in Poland.
Jared’s paternal grandmother was named Ruth Rackoff (the daughter of Bernard Rackoff and Ida). Ruth was born in New Jersey.
Jared’s maternal grandfather was David Polis (the son of Mendel/Michael Polees/Polis and Beila/Bertha Chatimiliansky). David was born in Connecticut, to Russian Jewish parents. Beila was the daughter of Mordechai Chatimilansky/Milians and Rochell Lotte/Leah/Lena Shulman, who were born in Vitebsk, Belarus.
Jared’s maternal grandmother was June Keller (the daughter of Nathan Kolominsky/Keller and Rae/Rachael German). June was born in New York. Nathan was the son of Israel Kolominsky and Brana Kemper. Rae was the daughter of Hyman German, who was born in Krosna, Lithuania, and of Rose Levinson.
