Israel was born in Nigeria, the son of Taiwo, a nurse, and Oluwafemi, an accountant. His family moved to Ghana for a time, then settled in Rotorua, New Zealand, when he was ten. He is fluent in Yoruba, Nigerian Pidgin, and English.
