Fernanda Torres is a Brazilian actress, and author. She is known for playing lawyer and activist Eunice Paiva in the film I’m Still Here, for which she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress. Her roles also include the series Baila Comigo, Selva de Pedra, As Filhas da Mãe, Os Normais, Tapas & Beijos, and Sob Pressão, the made-for-tv movie One Man’s War, and the films A Marvada Carne, Love Me Forever or Never, Kuarup, Beijo 2348/72, The Jew (1995), Four Days in September, Midnight (1998), So Normal, Redeemer (2004), The House of Sand, Saneamento Básico, and Playing (2007). She wrote the novels The End and Glory and Its Litany of Horrors.

Fernanda is the daughter of stage, television, and film actress Fernanda Montenegro (born Arlette Pinheiro Esteves da Silva) and actor Fernando Torres (Fernando Monteiro Torres). Her brother is film director Cláudio Torres. Fernanda and her mother are the only two Brazilian actresses to have been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress, her mother for Central Station (1998); and the only two people nominated for acting in Portuguese. Fernanda is also the first South American actress to win the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama, for I’m Still Here. Her mother is of half Portuguese and half Italian descent, and holds both Brazilian and Italian citizenship; she chose the name Montenegro after the family doctor.

Fernanda is married to film producer and director Andrucha Waddington, with whom she has two children.

Fernanda’s paternal grandfather was Manoel Monteiro Torres (the son of Etelvino Dias Torres, and of a woman surnamed Monteiro). Manoel was born in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Etelvino was the son of Manoel Dias Torres and Ana Maria Machado. Manoel’s maternal grandparents were José Victorino Monteiro and Rita de Paula Rego.

Fernanda’s paternal grandmother was named Hilda Costa Carvalho (the daughter of Manoel Alfredo de Carvalho). Manoel was the son of Jose Pinheiro de Carvalho and Maria Carolina.

Fernanda’s maternal grandfather was Vitórino Pinheiro Esteves da Silva (the son of José Pinheiro da Silva and Ana Albina/Alvina Esteves). Vitórino was born in Rio de Janeiro. José was born in Santa Clara-a-Nova, Almodôvar, Portugal, the son of José do Rego da Silva and Maria da Conceição. Ana was born in Torgueda, Vila Real, Portugal, the daughter of António Bernardo Esteves and Teresa Martins Balsa.

Fernanda’s maternal grandmother was Carmen Pinheiro Nieddu (the daughter of Pietrino Nieddu and Maria Francisca Pinna). Carmen’s parents were from Sardinia, Italy. Pietrino was born in Teulada, Cagliari, the son of Antioco Nieddu and Giuliana/Juliana Tiddia. Maria was born in Bonarcado, Oristano, the daughter of Francesco Pinna and Giovanna Piras.
