Elliott Smith was an American musician, singer, and songwriter.

Elliott was the son of Bunny Kay, an elementary school music teacher, and Gary Smith. He had deep roots in the American South, with most famiy lines leading to the Colonial U.S. He was raised by his mother in Duncanville, Texas.

Elliott’s paternal grandfather was Leonard Smith (was the son of Edward Walter Smith and Ada Ellen Jenkins). Leonard was born in Greene, Tennessee. Edward was born in Tennessee, the son of William John Smith and Adell Marianne Case. Ada was born in Tennessee, the daughter of William Payton Clifford Jenkins and Mary Jane Smith.

Elliott’s paternal grandmother was Thelma Helen Estino Layal (the daughter of David Charles Layal and Cora Bell Mansfield). Thelma was born in Missouri, to parents from Arkansas.
