Burna Boy is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, rapper, record producer, and dancer. He is one of the most successful African artists, and desribes his music style as “Afro-fusion.” He is also known as African Giant, ODG, and Big 7.

His father, Samuel Ogulu, is from Mbiama, Rivers State, and managed a welding company. He has stated that his father is Ijaw. His mother, Bose Ogulu, also known as “Mama Burna,” is a language translator, academic, and businessperson, who is now his manager. His sister, Nissi (Jehovah-Nissi Ogulu), is a singer, songwriter, entrepreneur, and engineer. Burna Boy was raised in southern Nigeria, and later moved to London, England, for school.

Burna Boy’s maternal grandfather is broadcaster and music critic Benson Idonije. Benson was born in Otuo, Owan East, Edo State, and was the first manager of legendary Afrobeat musician Fela Kuti.

    His father being from Rivers State makes me think that he’s definitely also “other.” That’s a diverse state, but with not many Yoruba speakers, which is honestly an understatement.
