His father, Dave Simmons, is an American professional basketball player and coach, who was raised in the South Bronx, and who played in the Australian domestic league in the 1980s and 1990s. His mother, Julie, is Australian. His father is African-American. His mother is white. His maternal half-sister, Emily, has rowed in college, and is married to American professional football player Michael Bush. His maternal half-brother is basketball player and coach Liam Simmons.

Ben was raised in Newcastle from infancy, later moving to Melbourne, and to the U.S. in 2013, initially living in Montverde, Florida.
