Andrei Konchalovsky is a Russian film and theatre director, screenwriter, and producer. Working in both the USSR/Russia and the U.S., he has directed the films The First Teacher, The Story of Asya Klyachina, A Nest of Gentry, Uncle Vanya (1970), A Lover’s Romance, Siberiade, Maria’s Lovers, Runaway Train, Duet for One, Shy People, Homer and Eddie, Tango & Cash, The Inner Circle (1991), Assia and the Hen with the Golden Eggs, House of Fools, Gloss, The Nutcracker in 3D (2010), The Postman’s White Nights, Paradise (2016), Sin (2019), and Dear Comrades! He wrote his House of Fools, and co-wrote all of his other films; except for The Story of Asya Klyachina, A Lover’s Romance, Runaway Train, Homer and Eddie, and Tango & Cash. He also co-wrote the films Ivan’s Childhood, Andrei Rublev, The Seventh Bullet, The Ferocious One, and A Slave of Love. He directed and wrote the mini-series The Odyssey (1997), directed the made-for-tv movie The Lion in Winter (2003), directed and co-wrote the series Khroniki russkoy revolyutsii, co-wrote the short film The Steamroller and the Violin, and directed and wrote the short film The Boy and the Dove. He is also known as Andrei Sergeyevich Mikhalkov-Konchalovsky.

Andrei is the son of Natalia Petrovna Konchalovskaya, a poet and translator, and Sergey Mikhalkov (Sergey Vladimirovich Mikhalkov), an author of children’s books and fables, often satirical, including the “Uncle Styopa” stories. His father also wrote the lyrics for the Soviet and Russian national anthems, co-writing the “State Anthem of the Soviet Union” in 1944, and new lyrics in 1970; and then writing the National Anthem of Russia in 2000. On his mother’s side, he is a grandson of painter Pyotr Konchalovsky, and a great-grandson of realist history painter Vasily Surikov. His brother is actor and filmmaker Nikita Mikhalkov (born Nikita Sergeyevich Mikhalkov). His half-sister, Ekaterina, was married to writer Yulian Semyonov. His uncle was Soviet intelligence officer and writer Mikhail Mikhalkov.

The Mikhalkov family are Russian nobility, dating back to the 15th century. He is descended from the Princely House of Golitsyn, through both his paternal great-great-grandmother Elizaveta Nikolayevna/Nikolaevna Golitsyna, and her mother-in-law, his great-great-great-grandmother Maria Sergeyevna Golitsyna. Through them, Andrei descends from Prince Vasily Vasilyevich Golitsyn (1643-1713), an aristocrat, statesman, and boyar, whose ancestors also included the Romodanovsky noble family. Andrei also descends from the Meshchersky princely family, the Bezobrazov noble family, and the Gorchakov noble family, including Imperial Russian Army General Pyotr Gorchakov.

Andrei is married to actress and television presenter Julia Vysotskaya. He has a son, film director Egor Konchalovsky, with his former wife, actress Natalya Arinbasarova; a daughter with his former wife Viviane Godet; two children with his former wife Irina Ivanova; and two children with Julia. His brother Nikita is married to fashion designer Tatyana/Tatiana Shigaeva Mikhalkova. Andrei is the uncle of actress, film producer, cameraperson, and television presenter Anna Mikhalkova; film director Artyom Mikhalkov; and actress Nadezhda Mikhalkova, who are Nikita’s children; and of journalist Olga Semenova, who is Ekaterina’s daughter.

Andrei’s paternal grandfather was Vladimir Aleksandrovich/Alexandrovich Mikhalkov (the son of Alexander Vladimirovich Mikhalkov and Anna Alica/Alisa Loginovna/Ludwigovna Müller/Miller). Vladimir was born in Saint Petersburg. Alexander was born in Moscow, the son of Vladimir Sergeyevich/Sergeevich Mikhalkov and Elizaveta Nikolayevna/Nikolaevna Golitsyna. Andrei’s great-grandmother Alica was an ethnic German, the daughter of Ludwig Theodor Müller and Mathilde/Matilda Louise/Karlovna Mukhanova von Fehleisen/Feleisen. Some of her family was from Tallinn, Estonia.

Andrei’s paternal grandmother was Olga Mikhailovna Glebova (the daughter of Mikhail Petrovich Glebov and Elizaveta Vasilyevna/Vasilievna Bezobrazova/Besobrazova). Olga was born in Kaidakovo, Venevsky District, Tula Governorate. Mikhail was the son of Pyotr Mikhailovich Glebov and Alexandra Semyonovna Ozerova; who was the daughter of Princess Anastasia Borisovna Mescherskaya. Andrei’s great-grandmother Elizaveta was the daughter of Vasiliy/Vasily Grigoryevich/Grigorievich Bezobrazov and Olga Petrovna Gorchakova.

Andrei’s maternal grandfather was Pyotr Konchalovsky (Pyotr/Petr Petrovich Konchalovsky, the son of Pyotr Petrovich Konchalovsky and Victoria Timofeyevna/Timofeevna Loyko/Loiko). Andrei’s grandfather Pytor was born in Sloviansk, Kharkov Governorate, and was a painter, and the founding member, and chairman, of the Knave of Diamonds group of avante-garde artists. Andrei’s great-grandfather Pytor was born in Sevastopol, Taurida Governorate, and was a translator and art publisher, with connections to the art world. He was the son of Pyotr Vasilyevich Konchalovsky and Maria Yakovlevna Abramenkova. Andrei’s great-grandmother Victoria was born in Kharkov Governorate, the daughter of Timofey (possibly Ivanovich) Loyko/Loiko.

Andrei’s maternal grandmother was Olga Surikova (Olga Vasilyevna/Vasilievna Surikova, the daughter of Vasily/Vassili Ivanovich/Ivanovitch Surikov/Sourikov and Elisabeth/Elizaveta/Élizabeth Augustovna/Avgustovna Charais). Vasily Surikov was born in Krasnoyarsk, Yenisei Governorate, and was a realist history painter. He was said to have been from a Yenisey Cossack family, descended from Don Cossacks. He was the son of Ivan Vasilyevich/Vasilievich Surikov, who had the civil rank of Collegiate Registrar; and of Praskovya Fyodorovna Torgoshina. Andrei’s great-grandmother Élizabeth was born in Saint Petersburg, the daughter of August/Auguste Charais/Charest, who was born in Charette, France; and of Maria Alexandrovna de Balmaine/Balmain/Balmen.

Andrei’s great-great-grandmother Maria Alexandrovna was the daughter of Count Alexander Karl Adeodat Antonovich Ramsay de Balmaine and Countess Glafira Nikolayevna Svistunova. She was of Russian, as well as some French, and possibly Dutch, descent.
