Philosophy Concept: Tri Hita Karana
Tri Hita Karana (“Three causes of wellbeing”) is a Hindu philosophical concept from Balinese Hinduism, emphasizing the harmony between various elements of life and the universe. It has three pillars (Parahyangan, Pawongan, Palemahan):
Parahyangan (Harmony with the Divine): The relationship between humans and God, expressed through prayers, offerings (like Canang Sari), and temple ceremonies to show gratitude and seek blessings. Parahyangan is a word of Sanskrit and Old Javanese origin that combines para (highest) and hyang, which means God.
Pawongan (Harmony among People): Fostering strong community bonds, cooperation, mutual respect, and shared responsibility, as seen in communal village life. Pawongan comes from the word wong (in Old Javanese), meaning person.
Palemahan (Harmony with Nature): Living sustainably with the environment, respecting natural elements like mountains, rivers, and forests, and ensuring balance. Palemahan comes from the Javanese word lemah meaning land.
