As if one game-watching tour was not enough, we were invited back to the jeeps at 6am sharp for a morning excursion. Of course I went!

No trip to South Africa is complete without a big-game safari adventure and so, of course, we made time for one! We set forth from Cape Town this morning for the 2½-hour drive to the arid Karoo region.

Today we said goodbye to Casa Tumi. Our host, Mary, suggested we stop by the Thaba Bosiu Cultural Village on our way back to South Africa. This national monument offers a chance to see some of Lesotho’s history and culture.

Our host informed us that we really must see Maletsunyane Falls, about 60 km / 35 miles south of our inn. We made the trip today and it was indeed a spectacular sight.

We arrived at our AirBNB after dark last night, so we didn’t really get to appreciate our surroundings. When we awoke, we found ourselves in a stunning mountain retreat:

“There is a border nearby … I must cross it!” I might have to ask that this be engraved on my tombstone. It is so me.

Today I left the conference a bit early to go exploring.

When Lisa and I met almost five years ago, doing big travel adventures was one of the things we most wanted to do together. We’ve had some excellent adventures together, but they have all been in North America. (OK, there was that one excellent adventure in Puerto Rico early on …)

I was on the ferry from Bainbridge Island to Seattle this morning. Perfectly timed for a brilliant sunrise.

On my way into town for some evening music fun when I spotted this view. I will never not enjoy the look of Liberty Bay on a calm evening like this.

Yesterday, my team helped sponsor the third Content Authenticity Summit at Cornell Tech on Roosevelt Island in New York City.

Spokane is blessed to have a nearly 40-mile bike trail as part of the state parks system. The trail mostly follows the Spokane River from the state line with Idaho to the Nine Mile Recreation Area.

Imagine having an entire state park to yourself and 100 of your closest friends? It’s possible – and that’s the entire point of Camp Wooten Retreat Center.

Now that the construction has settled down, I thought I’d take a moment to appreciate the new ferry terminal in Seattle at dusk.

Squilchuck State Park is tucked into the mountains south of Wenatchee. It’s primarily a park for mountain bikers and cross-country skiiers. I’m neither, but I did get a chance to stretch my legs on its several miles of hiking trails recently.

Curlew Lake is a quiet lake-and-campground park tucked away in the hills of northeastern Washington.

This small state park commemorates the life of Ranald MacDonald, a 19th-century pioneer and explorer.

Riverside is really many parks rolled together under one name. I had a few hours in one afternoon to explore it, which was not nearly enough, but what I saw I truly enjoyed.

I learned about this “park” only a few weeks ago. I knew that I would have to add it to this site, and that doing so would be uncomfortable.

It’s been a while since I’ve done a park visit. The 20 or so parks that remain on my to-do list are mostly open seasonally, so the project necessarily took a bit of a hiatus this past winter.

This week I’m attending the 38th biannual Internet Identity Workshop, which is one of the most valuable conferences I’ve encountered in any professional space. As the name might suggest, the topics are largely around how to express human and organizational identity in digital terms that respect privacy and security. When I attended the previous IIW last fall, I wrote about it in real time as the conference was in progress. That format worked well for me and received a lot of compliments, so I’m attempting it again this week.

If you’ve been following my photoblog of late, you know that I’ve been doing a lot of experimenting with infrared photography. I’ve finally settled on a camera that I really like and in this article, I’ll share some of the things I’ve learned along the way.

“Take lots of great photos!”

That was the most common farewell comment before I embarked on this journey. While I appreciate the well-wishes from friends who appreciate my photography, I’m very consciously trying to shoot less.
