For scholars and students interested in tracing the doctrine of Penal Substitutionary Atonement (PSA) within early Christian theology, a dedicated volume is now available that examines its foundational presence in Patristic thought and its subsequent development. The work opens with an overview of the core theological concepts, followed by an analysis of their reception and elaboration across the Latin, Byzantine, and Reformed traditions—from the medieval period through the Reformation and into post-Reformation theology.
The central section of the volume provides a comprehensive and systematic analysis of more than thirty Church Fathers, drawing directly from primary sources to identify and elucidate the presence, as well as the subtleties and variations, of substitutionary and penal motifs within their respective soteriological frameworks. This examination deliberately transcends a mere florilegium of isolated Patristic quotations. Particular emphasis is placed on situating each Father’s statements within their exegetical context, attending closely to the author’s explicit rationale and conceptual development. In so doing, the study consciously avoids the word-concept fallacy—the exegetical error of equating the presence or absence of specific terminology with the presence or absence of the underlying theological concept itself—thereby ensuring a more nuanced and defensible interpretation of the sources for those readers who are more conscious of such mistakes.
It is available in Hardback, Paperback, and Kindle versions.
