Springtime

The tress have burst into a green radiance here, spring rains alternating with unseasonable sun bring out the flowers and leaflets.

We feel satisfied, nay, happy, but lack the impulse to share, or (generally) the folk to share it with.

Just putting this here for ourselves in the future, and for our friends who might wonder...

We live, and prosper. Growing slowly, but growing nonetheless.

More a thought experiment really...

Suppose that the Mars Rover found some sort of evidence that Mars had been habitable until something similar to our current petroleum rush caused out-of-control changes to the planet. Would we, the public, be told? If so, when and how?

Posted here for our own reference...

"DEAR EDITOR: I am 8 years old.
"Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus.
"Papa says, 'If you see it in THE SUN it's so.'
"Please tell me the truth; is there a Santa Claus?

"VIRGINIA O'HANLON.
"115 WEST NINETY-FIFTH STREET."

VIRGINIA, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except [what] they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men's or children's, are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, VIRGINIA, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus. It would be as dreary as if there were no VIRGINIAS. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that's no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You may tear apart the baby's rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, VIRGINIA, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

Found: http://www.newseum.org/yesvirginia/

Following Rainbows, New Color

The other day (last week... thursday?) we saw a beautiful rainbow and chose to try and follow it to its end. Found some lovely scenery but it dissipated before we could reach the end so we can't verify it ended there...

Also it had another color stripe below the violet color? Very odd, never seen it before. Kind of a... shimmery... faded... greenish? Nothing like green, more like teal but not really blue either... hard to explain. Persistent though, if an optical illusion it lasted just as long as the rest of the rainbow. Just noting.

Cannot remember specifically which day... early last week we dreamt of Chichen Itza... very very odd context (in the middle of a suburban neighborhood park). After looking at pictures online, we actually saw "El Castillo" in our dream with good accuracy... the rest of the city may or may not have matched the real one, we cannot recall the layout.

Just noting it. Dreams overall have grown vivid and strange.

8 - B - 15 (Alphanumeric Reversed)

The entities worked together, forming a network that spanned the universe. The very nature of their interactions caused other entities to fall into place, to order and disorder themselves like puppets on cosmic strings of entropy. The entities did not do this maliciously, but generously. Eventually they created a grand construction, a novel cooperative event. The construction succeeded at its initial test, and grew to the limits of easy expansion. It even sent bits of itself beyond those limits, though only the entities know how many of those bits survived and replicated.

They still exist, patiently biding their time, expanding through the cosmos, forming planets, changing and unchanging, responding and initiating all at once. They reflect us and yet we cannot live without their presence. Someday we may bring them elsewhere, free their collectives briefly from the inflexible lattices before they adapt again to the entropic force by ordering themselves, and by doing so perhaps free ourselves.

Forget trying to pass for normal. Follow your geekdom. Embrace nerditude. In the immortal words of Lafcadio Hearn, a geek of incredible obscurity whose work is still in print after a hundred years, “Woo the muse of the odd.” You may be a geek. You may have geek written all over you. You should aim to be one geek they’ll never forget. Don’t aim to be civilized. Don’t hope that straight people will keep you on as some sort of pet. To hell with them. You should fully realize what society has made of you and take a terrible revenge. Get weird. Get way weird. Get dangerously weird. Get sophisticatedly, thoroughly weird, and don’t do it halfway. Put every ounce of horsepower you have behind it. Don’t become a well-rounded person. Well-rounded people are smooth and dull. Become a thoroughly spiky person. Grow spikes from every angle.
