Character Name: Aigis.
Character Series: Persona 3: FES. Specifically from The Answer.
Character Age: Going from the canon she was built about ten years ago, but on Mayfield she’ll be 16 biologically speaking.
Background: From the Megami Tensei Wiki.
And here is my personal take on her history:
Aigis life, in a nutshell, is clearly defined in three moments: Ten years prior the game, in the game during The Journey, and the game’s epilogue, The Answer. Each of these moments in her life are marked by change…and by the fact she was actually functional.
Aigis’ life before The Journey goes back to the time when she was deployed as the anti-shadow weapon she is in order to hunt the Death Arcana, which had been released in a faulty way after a number of scientists from the Kirijo Group tried to release it. It was during this time that Aigis was gifted with the red ribbon she would always sport later on, and where she gave her first steps to difference herself from a mere machine, although it was still too soon for that. The mission left Aigis as the sole remaining anti-shadow weapon in functional state, and she was to seal Death into the body of a young boy who had lost his parents in the whole ordeal. Despite her victory, Aigis was badly damaged, losing her memories of the events as a result, and was took out of commission afterwards. Ten years passed quietly.
Aigis would stay “asleep” until July, when Minato and the rest of the SEES would head to the beach; the proximity to the boy she had failed to protect somehow prompted to wake herself up from her slumber, and after a few series of awkward meetings –and failed flirting attempts- Aigis was properly introduced to the group, and she was made a member as well. She was also scheduled to start school with the rest of them when classes restarted. Her time spent with the rest of the SEES was, to put it simple, a growing time for her. Living the daily routine of a normal teenager –one that had to fight Shadows now and then, of course- helped her to grow out of being “a simple machine” and starting to gain emotions and experiences on her own.
Even if those were only months, Aigis “lived” through a lot, keeping Minato as safe as she could as well as trying to learn all she could about life and her role in it. She was also the only one that sensed Ryoji presence as dangerous, warning Minato not to get close to the boy, although her warnings go unheard. Aigis stayed alongside Minato and the SEES all the way down their path, and once the twelfth shadow was defeated, Ikutsuki reprogrammed her to bring the other SEES members to Tartarus, where he forced her to subdue them. Ikutsuki then revealed his plan to carry on the goal of bringing back the Death Arcana, and for that ordered Aigis to kill her friends, but she manages to overcome her programming by sheer force of will, turning the fight to Ikutsuki. Unfortunately, Mitsuru’s father would be killed by him before he killed himself. Aigis and company would have to eventually fight Ryoji, who was the personification of Death was to take his place and bring the Arcana back into existence. Is during this fight she recalls her lost memories of her mission ten years ago, how she sealed Death into Minato, and why she was so wary of Ryoji. She is severely damaged during that fight, and after being repaired she demands Minato to kill Ryoji, as she has proven to be a failure, and “just a machine”, which makes the rest of SEES pretty much jump at her and tell her she’s already a lot more than just a machine, and to have more trust in herself.
Aigis faces Nyx with the rest of SEES, and is the only one that remembers everything that transpired, Minato’s sacrifice and borrowed time included. She lets him have a normal month of life though, since she considers he deserves to cherish every moment of the little time he has left, and on Graduation day let him rest on her lap as he falls asleep for the last time, as she promises him she will protect him for the rest of her life.
Minato’s death shook Aigis more than anyone else; in The Answer we learn that she had the same dream about being unable to catch up with him, and a strong wish to lose her emotions and become “just a machine” once more; since her purpose in life was to protect Minato, his death pretty much left a void in her she couldn’t fill in any way. Having kept his evoker, Aigis cut her studies and decided to stay in the lab, shutting herself away from the others. After some time of struggling, though, she somehow manage to discard her negative feelings, although now she feels completely empty, being unable to sleep anymore.
It’s during the last SEES meeting their members decide to have on March 31 that Aigis and company become apparently trapped in time, the 31st repeating itself over and over. To make things worse, soon after being locked they are attacked by Metis, apparently another anti-shadow weapon that claims to be Aigis’ “sister”; in the heat of the battle, Metis takes the upper hand and apparently inabilities Aigis, which causes her to awaken her Wild Card powers, allowing her to change and summon Personae at will, very much like Minato. This change is marked by her original Persona, Athena, changing into Minato’s Morpheus. Aigis beats Metis, and she is restrained while the group tries to understand what is going on. It’s Metis who ultimately explain things to them, and is the one who introduces the group to the Abyss of Time, which has suddenly appeared and taken over the dorms’ basement. Trapped and without a real choice, Aigis is appointed as the new leader based on her Wild Card ability, and leads an exploration group through the series of doors found on the Abyss.
Three things stand on their explorations: the presence of incredibly strong Shadows, the mysterious gates that show them the past of the members of SEES and the elusive figure that keeps running around and looks like Minato. After seeing the past of everyone and learning about the time where they first awakened their Persona (all but Metis, who doesn’t count, Fuuka, who everyone knew of already and Aigis) the party watches Aigis recurrent dream about chasing Minato, and they are attacked by none other than Minato’s shadow, whom they are forced to kill. Each member of SEES is given a key then, and only fusing the Eight Keys of Destiny they will be able to open the dorm door and leave…or visit Minato’s room, which is locked, and see his past. A big argument ensues, with Yukari insisting on seeing the past, and Junpei disagreeing, among others like Akihiko asking her to let it go. Seeing as how the argument just gets more and more heated, Metis suggests they all fight for the keys, and so four groups are formed, with Metis teaming with Aigis, whom ultimately win and receive Fuuka’s key without a fight. Aigis then decides not to use the key to see the past, but rather use a door they had been keeping to go to the mall as a gateway to the past, as the gates are meant to show them what they wish for.
Aigis and the rest effectively go to the past, where they see Minato’s sacrifice and how his life energy is sealing Nyx now, and also discover that it wasn’t Nyx the one they had to keep at by, but Erebus, born from the people’s lack of sense of life and desire to die, who would use Nyx to cause the Fall; by sealing Nyx, Minato managed to keep it from Erebus. The monster, sensing Aigis’ power, lunges at the group, who is forced to fight and defeat the creature, although not permanently, as men will keep on wishing death, although the group decide to live up to Minato’s name and make the most of their lives.
The group then appears at the Velvet room, where Aigis’ connection to their inhabitants, as well as hers and Minato’s quest finds some explanation, and Metis is revealed to be those emotions and desiers Aigis threw away when she stopped dreaming. Aigis, having apparently found her answer to life, starts to fall asleep, saying she doesn’t regret if she has to die now, but as she drifts off a voice tells her she could be useful to spread his (Minato’s) message.
The SEES then wake up, now in the early morning of April 1st, only to find that everything is back to normal, although Aigis isn’t waking up. They carry her to her room, where Fuuka runs a scan on her, discovering that Aigis’ Wild Card power pretty much fried her computer brain, and while it’s possible to repair her, she won’t ever be the same Aigis again. Aigis, however, wakes up, acting completely normal in the face of how impossible it actually is for her to be moving, which strongly suggests that in a way, she is truly alive. After the commotion is over, Aigis asks if it’s still possible to change plans and have her go to school instead of returning to the lab, and thanks to Mitsuru surely pulling some strings, she heads out with everyone, where Yukari, who had been at odds almost all the time with her, offers to be her roommate, to which she happily agrees. Aigis is coming to Mayfield right before the SEES start fighting each other.
Personality:
Aigis is odd, this should be obvious to anyone that has known her in her canon for about two minutes and isn’t a brainless NPC. Being the robot she is, Aigis isn’t built to be a social creature, and this isn’t just about her looks; no matter how much humanization she goes through, Aigis is mainly a mission centered person, who always needs a goal, a north to look at, or else she feels completely lost and conflicted. She shows a great deal of despair after Minato’s death after this, and it only gets better when she realizes that she can keep her promise in a way. There is also her strong attachment towards Minato, guided by her guilt over not being able to protect him and the fulfillment of her duty when it came to protect him from Death, something that depresses her greatly once she fails.
As time has passed, Aigis has grown considerably; when first met, she talked in a monotone voice that ever rarely took intonation to express emotions, but as she spent more time with the SEES she gained a voice on her own, starting to put emotion behind of what she says. By the Answer, Aigis, while always keeping a somewhat inhuman and robotic tone, possesses a voice full of emotion, which makes it easy for others to know her feelings. She’s also capable of crying, apparently, as well as sleeping and dreaming, something she couldn’t do at the beginning. Aigis doesn’t think of herself as a human being, nor does she actively wishes to become one; she knows she isn’t human, but considers herself as alive as the rest, although her confidence regarding this point is always being tested by diverse things. She has grown to use her imagination and creativity, breaking the mold of a completely logical computer, although she is mainly guided by logic, and while she accepts and even uses magic, her mind will always go to the logic solutions, and then consider trying to get creative.
For lack of a better term, Aigis can be a little obsessive about stuff she considers important, to the point that even considering she’s an android she suffered from insomnia, and her self-confidence is more fragile than one would initially think; she’s easy to upset with certain topics, and a good deal of stuff will just leave her blinking; she isn’t precisely well versed on sarcasm and irony yet, and her jokes might come as crude, completely tasteless or just unfunny. She rarely makes jokes, obviously. Aigis cares deeply for her friends, and is fully prepared to give her life for someone else’s; she’s driven to help in any situation where she knows she can be of use, and won’t hesitate to offer a hand to someone in need.
Even after developing emotions, Aigis is completely clueless about romantic feelings, and will not understand anyone’s advances; her closeness to Minato is more of the duty-oriented kind, and while she grew fond of him, is not canonical to say she actively had romantic feelings towards him; it’s true that Aigis did try to spend as much time as she could around him, but is hard to tell where the duty ended and where her personal interests stared. At any rate, she’s quick to grow fond of new people, provided they don’t give her a reason to distrust, and is usually strangely active and curious. She’s way more informed about the world than before, but still has a lot of doubts, which she will ask to whoever she considers most adequate.
Abilities:
Aigis is specifically built for combat, so she’s several times more resistant, faster, stronger and flexible than a human being. Her hands can turn into guns, or have diverse appendages attached to them in order to increase the damage done. She is fully reparable, can’t function for extended times without needing to “turn off” or sleep to recharge batteries, and while she doesn’t need food she’s fully capable of drinking and eating, as well as possessing the five senses.
Aigis is a Persona user, and even more, a Wild Card user, which means she can freely change from one Persona to the next. Furthermore, Aigis doesn’t need of an evoker to bring her Persona out.
