Epicentral is a network-based educational application that displays lists and maps of earthquakes that occurred during the last day, week, or month. This version runs on iPhones, iPads, and Macs (as an iPad App) but requires iOS 26+ and macOS 26+. The data are served by the U.S. Geological Survey or the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (and three other seismological organizations). List updates take at most a few 10s of seconds. For each event, a summary of the event’s properties and relationship to nearby recent seismicity is presented. When using the USGS feeds, a link to the event-specific USGS earthquake information page is available. Several historical earthquake catalogs (sourced from the US Geological Survey) are included to provide context for more recent earthquakes. These catalogs can be used to put more recent activity in context.

Version History Some tweaks to the dark-mode display of focal mechanisms and the addition of a focal mechanism summary section in the event extend information sheet. 3.1.2 May 25 Now includes information on faulting geometry (focal mechanisms) in the extended event information sheet. 3.1.0 May 15 Many cosmetic changes, enhanced search capabilities, and resizable detail maps, a few new earthquake feeds [GEOFON (Germany), INGV (Italy), GeoNET (New Zealand)], and the ability to acquire additional information (more magnitudes, moment-tensor solutions, and location-uncertainty estimates) for each earthquake. 3.0.0 May 4 Added the ability to acquire seismic event locations from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre earthquake service. Also includes minor bug fixes and cosmetic changes. 2.4.0 03/25/2024 Minor bug fixes and cosmetic changes. New in this version is the ability to include historic events on the detailed event map view to provide context for recent seismicity. 2.3.0 03/18/2024 Minor bug fixes and cosmetic changes. I added a summary view of regional events to the detailed map view. Tap the bar chart button next to the settings button to see the summary. The detail map summary is similar to the global summary and includes a list of the 10 largest events, a magnitude timeline, an event-counts timeline, and a depth histogram for the region surrounding the selected event. 2.2.0 03/06/2024 An interface change for the iPad version - moved the controls to the detail view, which is always visible and wide enough to hold all the controls. Added a list of active regions (by event counts) and a list of the largest events in the Global Statistics Summary. 2.1.0 01/23/2024 This is a complete revision of an app that was available until 2017. Yes, it took that long for me to get back to it. This version runs on iPhones, iPads, and Macs (as a usable iPad port). This version includes more options than the original and several historical seismic event catalogs to provide context. 2.0.0 01/11/2024 Updated to run under IOS 7. Some new features, but not much different than the previous version. Now includes USGS 30-day feeds, and PAGER summary charts for earthquakes equal to or larger than magnitude 6.5. Some settings parameters are adjustable in the Apple Settings Application. 1.1.0 10/11/2013 1.0.0 11/24/2008
