Find Your Saved Wi-Fi Password in Seconds
In today’s digital life, internet connectivity is interwoven with almost every daily activity. When your Wi-Fi suddenly fails or when you need to connect a new device but can’t remember the password, frustration sets in.
Assignments, streaming, video calls or gaming all grind to a halt. Fortunately, on a Mac or Windows computer or laptop, retrieving stored Wi-Fi passwords is often possible in just a few seconds. The system already holds these credentials, making reconnection or password sharing straightforward.
On a Mac, all passwords are stored in Keychain Access, including Wi-Fi network credentials.

To find a Wi-Fi password:
• Open the Keychain Access application.
• In the sidebar, select “System” or “Login” keychains, and search for your Wi-Fi network name.
• Double-click the network name, check the Show Password box, and authenticate with your Mac’s administrator password.
This method reveals the stored password and lets you view every saved network easily. Keychain Access is widely documented as the macOS utility for storing passwords.

On Windows, you can view the password for the current network quite easily. Open Settings → Network & Internet → Wi-Fi → Hardware properties → Wireless Properties, then go to the Security tab and check Show characters to reveal the password. In older versions or via Control Panel, you can navigate through Network and Sharing Center → Wireless Properties → Security and select Show characters.
To find passwords of previously saved networks on Windows:
1. Right-click the Windows icon and open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
2. Type netsh wlan show profile and hit Enter to display all stored Wi-Fi profiles.
3. Then run
netsh wlan show profile name="YourNetworkName" key=clear
This shows detailed information, including the password, next to Key Content.
These commands provide a way to retrieve passwords of networks you’re not currently connected to, provided the credentials were stored.
Why This Matters
Without internet access, many of our activities—from work and study to streaming or online meetings—come to a standstill. Being able to quickly retrieve a stored Wi-Fi password saves time, reduces hassle, and enables easy password sharing with friends or colleagues. For users who frequently work with multiple devices or have many saved networks, mastering these methods can eliminate the need to memorize or repeatedly reset passwords.
Smart Tips & Safety Precautions
• Always keep backups of important passwords in a secure place.
• Use QR codes to safely share the network credentials with trusted people.
• When connecting to a new network, retrieve the password directly from your computer rather than copying it haphazardly.
• Before granting access to unknown devices, consider changing the password first to ensure network security.
Whether on a Mac or Windows PC, the ability to uncover saved Wi-Fi passwords makes reconnection faster, sharing easier, and ensures your online life continues uninterrupted. Once you learn the technique, forgetting passwords becomes a thing of the past.
